Could I have developed a hernia?

Posted by lorrie48 @lorrie48, 2 days ago

I have an ultrasound appointment and a pulmonology appointment next week to address my concerns, but I was wondering if anyone in this group has ever developed a hernia from coughing and, if so, what it felt like. Thank you for any input.

Unfortunately, I can answer this question. I developed an umbilical hernia from coughing incorrectly. I've had bronchiectasis for some time, and if you think info is hard to come by now, only imagine how scarce it was 20 years ago. Thankfully hernia is small. PCP said the surgery is a difficult recovery and since it's small just live with it. I am not to lift over 20 lbs (?) I've changed my clearance routine and I'm careful to hold in my belly button during huff coughs. Alas, my bikini days are over....

Coughing incorrectly? Who knew? I was told women in general may develop MAC from coughing incorrectly. Until I was diagnosed two years ago, I'd never heard of such a thing. Right now, I'm just speculating about a hernia, guessing it's of the intercostal variety. The discomfort is located between my ribs beneath my right breast. Usually, there's just soreness, but every once in a while it feels like there's a balloon with no room to swell. Next week, I have an ultra sound scheduled. Maybe we'll find out something conclusive. Thank you for your response. I'll be sure to discuss clearance routines with my pulmonologist. (I never even had bikini days :-D)

can ultrasound show hernia? I have coughing fits from time to time and my head hurts, especially when I woke up in the morning as I always cough.

Don’t worry too much, it was very vigorous coughing and incorrect airway clearance. It took a while occur.
