Why don’t anxiety meds work for me?

Posted by dorothy1914 @dorothy1914, Feb 13 5:13pm

In Sept. 2024 out of nowhere I developed extreme anxiety. Went to primary care doctor and was prescribed Effexor (which I had successfully taken previously). This time it didn’t provide any help. Dr. then prescribed Lexapro (which didn’t help) and then Celexa (which didn’t help). By this time, I lost 45 pounds by not being able to eat and constant diarrhea. Dr. then told me to find another practitioner as there was nothing more she could do for me. Since then I have seen 4 PNP and none of their prescribed meds have helped. What do I do?

Have you heard of Audio-visual entrainment, a subset of brainwave entrainment, uses flashes of lights and pulses of tones to guide the brain into various states of brainwave activity. AVE devices are often termed light and sound machines or mind machines. Altering brainwave activity is believed to aid in the treatment of psychological and physiological disorders. I bought a Kasina Mind Media system. It helps me go to sleep, there are preprogrammed relaxation, meditation, sleep, learn sessions and you have the ability to write your own. Might be worth looking into. For reference purposes I’m 70. I also live in Arizona.

Thank you for your suggestion. I think something like that might make my frazzled nerves worse. Every little sound startles me and I am sensitive to light. Going through protracted withdrawal from Effexor has been a nightmare as you never know what bizarre symptom might pop up next.

My old psychiatrist had a DNA test on me to see which meds work for me and which don't. You might want to ask about that.
They were doing optional for all their patients, and the nurse did inform me if my insurance wouldn't cover it, because of our financial situation they would wave the bill. And we never did see a bill.
And have you tried Clonazepam?

@alana68 have not tried clonazepam. Dr. suggested it but I had read a lot of horror stories about it. Have not had DNA testing either. Going through protracted withdrawal now and it is beyond any kind of description. Can’t leave the house. Have no medication of any kind.

You have full control of sound volume and light intensity .

You should have the Genomind test for find out if you have the MTHFR gene mutation, this may be causing your meds not to work. I would definitely check it out. Best of luck

Also, Genomind will work with you on cost. After the test. Just tell them you cannot afford the full amount.
I only had to pay $300. Good luck
God bless

I can’t know for sure why they don’t help you but I’m a person they don’t help either.

A few reasons in my case.

1) I’m highly treatment resistant when it comes to drugs overall. Especially SSRIs and A/Ds overall. I get very sick with side effects and eventually have no choice but to quit taking them.

2) Most important thing to ensure is that you’ve been properly diagnosed. For over a decade, I tried anything and everything and NOTHING worked. Just recently I finally learned why and it’s because I was never properly diagnosed and that in of itself was a huge part of the problem.

With my condition, I should NEVER be taking A/Ds.

This may not be the case for you at all but if you’re unsure, it might be something for you to consider.

What were you diagnosed with? I’m struggling to get on antidepressants and nothing is working.

I have anxiety and depression and the Effexor worked for 30 years and then I stupidly went off of it without a proper taper. All my fault.

Anxiety and depression. I was doing fine on Paxil and new primary care told me everyone should try once to go off their medication. Big mistake. Can’t get back on anything

I don’t know what to say. I thought I was the only one suffering like this but in my case it was my poor decision that ruined my life.
