Timing on return of fib after being shocked

Posted by marlenesusan @marlenesusan, May 7 8:45am

My heart was shocked yesterday and is now beating nicely in sinus rhythm, but after researching I see that it's probable that my heart will go back into fib again. It had to be shocked because it was beating at 120bpm resting. I'm about ready to take a 4 day road trip and don't want it to go back to fib while I'm driving. How long did it take forAfib to set in after your heart was shocked?

@marlenesusan

Have you considered the shock so your bpm is lower and more consistent?

Yep headed in the shock direction. Started Eliquis waiting for Metroprol and in about 30 day or so they will ask me to touch these two wires to my tongue 😜.

My first shock is coming up in a few weeks so I will try and remember and check back in.

My husband has been shocked 7 times in 10 years and he has had 3 ablations. His first ablation lasted about a year. He went back into a-fib and had a 2nd ablation. He went back into a-fib a couple months after his 2nd ablation. His cardiologist said the heart can go back into a-fib during the first 3 months after an ablation while the heart is still healing. He was shocked again and that lasted about a year. He had a 3rd ablation in March and is still in normal sinus rhythm. His cardiologist will not do more than 3 ablations so if he goes back into a-fib he will have to get another cardioversion or a pacemaker. Bottom line, on average his cardioversions lasted anywhere from a few months to a year and the ablations lasted about a year before a-fib returned. He had less a-fib episodes after he gave up alcohol and caffeine and began exercising regularly.
