The Big Three and probiotics
I have to start The Big 3 in June and am terrified of the side effects, I have noted in various posts on this group that people use probiotics to help manage side effects. My question is which probiotic or brand name or ant info.. Because when I Google probiotics, hundreds of different kinds pop up without descriptions of what they are used for. Any advice and specifics would be appreciated.

@doberdoo I found the same issue when starting the antibiotics. I received no real direction from my doctors or pharmacist so I went online and researched the best I could. Probiotics are all different so it is important to get the right strains. I finally settled on California Gold Lactobif 30. I take 1 a day and until my new ID Dr messed with my meds did quite well. A little nausea in the beginning but it resolved and I have been able to tolerate taking all these antibiotics daily. Best of luck to you!
Sometimes this group is atrocious in their lack of response. Do you pick and choose who you like or don't like to respond to? I have read many posts of people praising the effectiveness of using probiotics to help through the Big 3treatment yet only one person bothered to respond. What is up with that. What have I done to warrant being ignored? I simply asked for what KIND of probiotics to use for the Big 3 side effects because there are literally thousands advertised but for different conditions. Do I need to quit this group because no one wants to bother to help me?
I'm sorry you feel you are being ignored. There could be many reasons why no one has responded yet. However, if you go to the main page for this group and type in the search bar for "probiotics" you will see several discussions regarding probiotics that you can read through to obtain some information as well. I know some subjects get discussed at length and often and others do not.
I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this and that you are frustrated. I believe you need to give us more time. I generally only look at this forum in the early morning while I do daily airway clearance (24 hours). Sometimes I see a post that has no responses yet and post a little note welcoming them and saying others will respond (and they do).
I haven’t been on the big 3, but take a probiotic 1-2 times/week (other issues). I’ve asked pharmacists and was told brand doesn’t matter. (I doubt that.) I use CVS brand that had a variety of strains.
If your infectious disease doc has MyChart, you could send a note to find out is they have a recommendation.
Throughout my treatmment of 23months i used florastor which says on the package “during antibiotic treatment”Its about 30$ And its in every store. I never had diarea. I would also buy just for change at wholefoods from the fridge section liquid probiotic in a bottle. It all helped me survive the antibiotics. I hope it helps
I go to a local speciality pharmacy, rather than ordering online. They get right from the refrigerator and give me an ice pack to get it home. So check out your local "speciality pharmacy" not CVS or Walgreen.
So when I was on the "big 3" I ended up in renal failure and liver failure, so have removal of gall bladder in the hospital and on dialysis for 6 weeks. The ID doc I saw was ready to retire, so thst to say make sure that labs monitoring kidney and liver function are monitored every 3 months.
Hello Susanbeth,
Just saw your post now. I take a Thorne Flora/Mend Prime Probiotic, 1 a day, excellent quality, does not need refrigeration and is shelf stable in a cool, dry place. It is a Cdn product so don’t know if you can obtain in US. My best health wishes to you.
@derbodoo,
Re Probiotic
My Pulmon. Nurse Practioner recommended Florastor for me.
It was a little on the expensive side for my budget so I'm looking for something more affordable.

Hi doberdoo, I just started yesterday on 3 antibiotics (Arikayce, Linezolid, and Nuzyra) and also now investigating probiotics. In the past, I have had good luck at Vitamin Cottage. I was in not long ago, just looking at some supplements and the first person I spoke to really could not answer my questions, so she directed me to someone that was quite knowledgeable. I plan on going back in soon and seeing if the same person is working. If so, I will message you. I will also take "cwal's" advise and do a search on this site. Good luck to you!
