Posted by elli7 @elli7, 2 days ago

No problem at all for At least eight years.
Two weeks ago, I put a pillow under my knee because I was having knee problems. The next morning I had terrible pain in that hip and have had ever since lateral movement really is painful

Any thoughts or help??

Sorry, I don't have any experience myself, as I'm looking for the same sort of help myself. A couple of weeks ago I got arthroscopic surgery on my left knee, and it went well (still leg swelling tho). I've found that I have a lot of left hip joint pain (I had my hip replacement in Feb 2016) when I get up off a chair or the couch, followed by standing upright, putting half of my weight on that leg. Then it takes 1 to 5 minutes for it to subside before I can put walk on the leg without hobbling on it terribly. Yesterday I had an appt with the the ortho surgeon who operated on my knee, and I complained about how much the hip joint hurts when I stand up, looking for advice. But he didn't have any, he just said it was likely that I was contorting my hip in some way due to my cartilage issue with my left knee, and the hip would adjust and the pain would go away by itself, or with PT. As I was laying on the exam table,he rotated that leg and asked if I felt any pain when he did that. I said no. I asked if an epidural injection would be a possible next step, and he said usually that is not done with artificial joints. I don't like the idea of taking frequent doses of NSAIDS to head off that pain, but for now, I have no other option. 400 mg of ibuprofen along with 1000 mg of Tylenol together do not help reduce my "stand-up" pain more than 50%. I thought I saw on one of the blog posts on this Mayo Clinic site that someone had gotten a procedure done on their artificial hip joint that worked and they were satisfied. So, I need to see a pain management (non-surgical) ortho doctor I've seen before to see if a MRI would show something. I don't know if a CT scan would show enough detail. For you -- how long does the pain last -- is it chronic and does it occur only when you move the leg laterally? When you placed that pillow under your knee, it may have caused a slight tear or rough edge in your meniscus and that's enough to cause joint alignment problems and your hip pain. You're not going far with it until you get a CT scan or MRI. I don't think PT is warranted until for you until the CT scan or MRI has been done. What pain reliever works best for you with this?

@elli7 The first thing I thought was hmmm, if your knee hurt first and now your hip, these are probably connected in some way.
If it was me, I would call my orthopedist (who is not strictly a surgeon) for a diagnostic workup to look at knee, hip and back. They would probably x-ray to be sure the implant is not the problem, them move on to knee and back. If there is nothing apparent there, they would give an order for PT to figure out which muscles, tendons or ligaments was causing a misalignment.

Do you still have access to the ortho who operated? If not, maybe start with you primary for initial diagnosis.

Sadly, my orthopod who replaced both hips has retired. This started in my knee mid-Sept. I had to stop my advanced tap class because of it.by Jan. I was having big time trouble doing my stairs. My family kept saying get over it. It's arthritis.
Now I have to use a walker and the pain is absolutely terrible. In fact, I haven't been able to do the stairs since February. Unfortunately, they're not interested. I need to be able to get downstairs and out so I could have somebody look at my knee and now hip. I have thought about calling an ambulance to take me to the ER but ......

I would do that. You need to get it diagnosed and treated. And not being able to exit your home if there is another emergency is very dangerous.
