Severe pain Eight years after hip replacement

Posted by elli7 @elli7, Apr 23 8:23am

No problem at all for At least eight years.
Two weeks ago, I put a pillow under my knee because I was having knee problems. The next morning I had terrible pain in that hip and have had ever since lateral movement really is painful

Any thoughts or help??

I actually did just have x-rays of my back and right hip. My THR on the right hip looks perfect. The problem now is that my spine has osteoarthritis and is causing the hip upper thigh pain.

The pain of an upper thigh problem can be tricky for us lay people. My suggestion will go back to your PCP and tell her (or him) that you are still having problems and you want to pin point what part of the leg it is coming from. As far as metal toxity goes or infections go, I would pose that as a posibility and see where it goes. I have one hip replaced and the other not but the same kind of debelitating pain in both of them (at different times). I was taking PT at the time and had to declare the affected leg (replaced hip) off-limits for excercise. It took several months of rest (no stairs-not even one!) but it was fine and very flexible after 5 years from replacement. Now the other leg is going through the same reaction (and xrays show that it needs to be replaced) but I know that there can be more than that. This will take some time to tease out.

@autnchris I would recommend you get a blood test; Cobalt / Chromium and infection; my wife had all three and required the whole prosthetic section removed, medicated spacer implant for 8 weeks and then a new implant and all levels dropped back to normal
