Volara and Medicare

Posted by mdf @mdf, May 12, 2023

I have a friend who has been prescribed the Volara Airway Clearance device. She has been told by the company who manufacturers it that Medicare doesn't cover it, but she was under the assumption that they do based on her conversation with the prescribing doctor. Has anyone on this forum had experience with this Volara device and payment by Medicare? If so, I would appreciate so much any info you may have. Thank you in advance.

The HCPCS codes are: E0481 (Intrapulmonary percussive ventilation system and related accessories), and E1399 (Durable medical equipment, miscellaneous [when specified as a combination continuous positive expiratory pressure (CPEP) and continuous high frequency oscillation (CHFO) device such as the Volara System for oscillation and lung expansion (OLE) therapy]
I hope this helps.

I have used the Volara since July 2022. My Medicare Advantage plan covered most of it.
It has alternating cycles of pressure which expands the airways and pulses which are kind of like an internal vest, all the while nebulizing (saline in my case). The nebulizer is weaker than my Ombra. So I use the Aerobika attached to the Ombra for morning airway clearance and the Volara in the afternoon. I was able to trial the Volara at NJH and my local pulmonologist before deciding to get it.

I also did a trial with the Volara an NJH and would like to get it, but my insurance Cigna does not cover it. The cost is $15,000. Could you tell me what Medicare Advantage plan you have that covered most of your Volara?

I had United Healthcare at the time. At one point we had to appeal. NJH and Hill ROM handled that process

Can you tell me if it has helped you?

Happy2023 honestly I don’t think it makes a difference. I hardly ever expectorate anything during airway clearance. Only when I nebulize with NaCl and unless I am sick it’s saliva or post nasal drip. So volara did not make change in this instance. I would say it dries my throat during sessions. It vibrates my chest more than the Philips vest I use. All in all I use it when I am in a hurry and need to clear the lungs - sessions are sort 10 minutes, and I use it as a rule on the weekends just for change. I wanted to have it because NJ therapist said it was helpful with my bronchiectasis and MAC so I got it. Well if you are approved , get it I would say so you don’t regret you did not. May be it is a better than other common equipment for you. Let me know how it goes. You can email me privately too.

Thank you for your reply. Please message me.
I have an active pseudomonas infection since the fall of 2023 that NJH is keeping knocked back with my airway clearance therapy. I will collect every day green mucus in my lungs and can clear it out with my therapy. I seem to think the Volara will help my lungs in ridding more of the green gunk.
