Can one stop taking prolia after the first shot?

I stopped Prolia for about 6 months when I moved abroad
The result was active osteoporosis and fractured vertebrae

Now back on it but thanks for advice about oral drug

I stopped when my teeth started hurting after my first acceptance of Prolia!

My Endocrinologist had me begin again with Fosamax on the first day of every week. I have had no negative symptoms.

Hi lessee, thank you for reaching out. I am doing well, although I have had some bilateral sacral fractures, which showed on MRI on 7/30/24. I really don't think it had anything to do with rebound from prolia...it would have happened a lot sooner. I haven't tried anything else. It seems I'm becoming allergic to just about everything in my old age. I'm due for dexa at end of November, so I'll know then, but don't have great expectations. I hope you find a better solution for yourself...be well!

You can find numerous anecdotal experiences of people who stopped Prolia after one shot. Here's mine - I had one shot of Prolia in February 2023; didn't take any follow-up medication and haven't had any fractures. But with anecdotal information you are not accounting for differences in age (I'm 68), fracture history (so far none luckily), diet and exercise, test results, etc.

From everything i have read, stopping Prolia you must take something else or you will lose more than when you started. I listened to Dr. Susan Otten's 10 things your doctor needs to know about osteoporosis which is on Utube. She explained that Prolia doesn't kill osteoclasts but basically separates them into one cell nucleus called osteomorphs which just wait for the drug to stop and they quickly form back into osteoclasts and resorb bone at a very rapid rate. So your mother would need to start on something else right away. Lots of people get off Prolia and take Fosomax while they decide if there is another drug to try. But waiting isn't a good idea.

As with any drug, there are pros and cons. When you read about the side effects of Prolia, you wonder if they are worth the risk. From reading the side effects, I see that when you stop Prolia, it looks very ominous. I am considering this very thing. I really would rather spend 5 good years rather than bone pain, which is common, and the risk of jaw problems. Of course, you must make an individual decision. Affording these drugs without insurance is insane.

After 24 months of Forteo, I only took one shot of Prolia and had jaw pain, so then went on Raloxifene with no problems or fractures for 5 or so years. Now back on Forteo.

I needed dental work before taking Prolia. Mandibular extraction. The dentists went the distance and did a wonderful job. My next Prolia injection was set for 1 month after the extraction. My primary orthopedist, thankfully, mentioned that I should put it off for two more months.

Not sure what I’ve gotten myself into but with osteoporosis I don’t have a choice. Now facing a third knee surgery on the same knee and later, TKA on the other. (Sorry to whine here.)
