I am almost 73 years old and have been on Prolia for 10 years. YES, I have significant hair loss! It began about five years after the first dose of Prolia and has been increasing as time has gone by. Doctors never like to admit that a side effect might be caused by a drug they prescribed and my doctor is no different. With that said, is my hair loss solely due to Prolia or could some of it be aging? A large percentage of women do experience female pattern baldness in older age. It's like male pattern baldness and caused by the same processes. It has been suggested I see a dermatologist but my guess is that it won't help anything. I believe the problem is Prolia. Or at least a good bit of it. It was also suggested I might want to switch to Reclast. Of course, that also comes with side effects. Seems every drug has a lot of side effects, so I begin to wonder which is worse: The disease or the cure? Seems BOTH have a lot of drawbacks. In addition, I have not only experienced female pattern baldness but my hair is now very thin and fragile all over my head. Is my age part of the equation? Perhaps. However my parents had all their hair when they were my age, albeit my mother's was thinning to some degree - but NOTHING like what I'm experiencing! Old age isn't all it's cracked up to be. Neither are all the drugs the medical profession so quickly dispenses.

This is my first time posting. To those of you wondering if Prolia caused your hair loss, below I share what I just read on the website, Medical News Today. I was researching information about Evenity, which may be my next move.

Here is the text I saw, word for word:
Is hair loss a side effect of Evenity?
No, you shouldn’t notice hair loss from Evenity treatment. Hair loss wasn’t a reported side effect in the drug’s clinical trials.
However, other medications prescribed for osteoporosis may cause hair loss. For example, it’s possible for Fosamax (alendronate) and Prolia (denosumab) to cause hair loss.

Yes! I am certainly not proposing anyone consider Evenity just to avoid possible hair loss. Evenity comes with its own side effects and risks. My statement was just to affirm that hair loss has been acknowledged in the literature for Prolia and Fosamax, so if you experienced it, it is reasonable to think it might be the osteoporosis medicine. We are getting educated about these drugs as best we can. Good luck to all!
I already knew all of the information you posted (having done my OWN research and checked with medical professionals, which NO ONE here is). My statement was merely to affirm that I have experienced hair loss taking Prolia. I guess this is just one more site where people feel they have all the information everyone else needs and can't wait to share it. End of story as far as I'm concerned.
I am so sorry to hear of your issues.
It sounds very familiar. My endocrinologist also has been no help with hair loss. I called Prolia to discuss side effects and the pharmacist also claimed it was not a side effect.
I am in the process of trying to determine what I can do about my massive hair loss after 3 shots. I also see a regenerative doctor who ordered extensive blood work which included the drawing of 25 tubes of blood. Most results have been close to the normal range except for the Human Transforming Growth Factor Beta 1 (TGF-b1). First time I have ever had this test--didn't even know what it was. My results are over 10X the high normal range. Dr. said TGF is an inflammatory marker and an indication there is inflammation in the body. Have to find out why?
I have quite a few of the side effects from high TGF-b1. Now I have to find out what toxin is causing it, (Ex: Enviromental Factors (mold etc), Metals, Cancer, or the Prolia)??? I am having an environmental. metal, and mycotoxins test done this week (will take several weeks for results to come in). We also have an inspector coming to our home to test for mold, etc. (Will also take a couple weeks for results). (And of course, all these costs are out of pocket, insurance doesn't pay for it.)
The way my hair is falling out, it will be visible to others shortly (already is to me). I have been researching wigs and figure I better go for a consultation before it is too visible.
I had my 3rd Prolia shot in April 2024, so it will be in my system through at least October.
May I ask what medicine you started taking to help with the Prolia rebound loss? I will have to make that decision by October. I will Not take Prolia again!!!
Sorry for being so lengthy, but since hair loss is a lot of times a result of inflammation, I thought maybe this blood test could be helpful to the group. I am just learning about this myself.
Wishing everyone the best and appreciate you sharing information on this website.
Hi,
My Hair loss was not severe-since I had very thick hair to begin with. I am 76 so hair loss is a product of aging. I was on actonel 35 mg. once a week for about 6 months and I started gagging on food not able to swallow properly. Had a barium swallowing test done -and they said I had some GERD. This is all from actonel-since I NEVER had this before. I have also had bloating between the Prolia and Actonel. So right now I am on a "drug holiday"-I am extremely fit take lots of natural calcium daily and my bone density showed some improvement. I was lucky after one Prolia shot and going off it I did not have rebound but maybe the actonel helped.

My hair fell out in great gobs right after my 3d Prolia shot.
This was 2 years ago. I refused to get any more shots so the doc put me on Risedronate. I haven’t had any repercussions.
I am now 79. I had a fall a couple months ago but didn’t break any bones.
My hair has come back a long way but still not as thick as it was.
