Paxlovid Covid Rebound

Posted by gregorb @gregorb, Apr 16 5:29pm

Was anyone else told there was a 25% chance of a rebound case if taking Paxlovid for Covid?Meaning 100% chance for me. 2 x positive in 10 days.

That’s pretty rough getting a positive result twice in such a short time, I’m sorry for your troubles. I used Paxlovid when I was infected with Covid but the FDA only approved it for five days. I did get better after a short time but it all came back with a vengeance. I later read that a well known doctor had a rebound reaction. I don’t remember anyone saying that this would happen, I would have opted out. I basically had blamed it on the short term usage.

@frouke. Thanks so much. Also for your reply and input. I'm so sorry for your suffering also. I take full responsibility knowing my luck. Nurse told me she'd only seen a handful of cases. I'm thankful the others who were infected at same time and took it didn't have rebound or get long covid. I'm going on 11 months. Fortunately, I don't have a terrible case. But any stress just feeds it. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and nausea are the worst. Hopefully, you are over it or getting better.?Thank you and good luck to you.

I was told it was a rare side effect but I think it was not rare at all, maybe even often. I got rebound too.

I had Long Covid and got Pax for my second Covid infection. No effect, but likely because treatment was started several days after the recommended window. It took me 2 1/2 months to fully recover. With my 3rd Covid infection, I specifically asked for Pax with symptom onset. Doc did a video visit and phoned in a script which I started that same afternoon. Experienced symptom relief by the next day. Symptoms almost completely annihilated in the 5 days of treatment. Had a friend who got Covid at the same time as I (same dinner party). He took Pax and had a very similar experience. Footnote: Asked my PCP for Pax to address the Long Covid, but no go since it's not approved for LC. We keep on truckin'....

Here what I was given in the ICU.

Are you sure you weren’t just still positive with first case? I was positive 21 days.
I had rebound after Paxlovid, but I’m a nerdy retired nurse and wasn’t surprised. People can also have a worsening of Covid symptoms if they don’t get Paxlovid-the bad respiratory symptoms used to appear later.

I tested positive for 21 days and had low grade fevers longer, but symptoms weren’t severe and I had no respiratory difficulty. I reminded myself of that often because I was sick of it by 3 wks.

I’d take Paxlovid again in a heartbeat. I lived in Philadelphia near Penn Medicine at start of pandemic. Philly was hit early and hard, before vaccines and treatments were figured out. The hospital was inundated and deaths were frequent.
