A lot of questions
Hi!
I am a 67 yo, recently diagnosed with dcis stage 0, 7mm spot, the cells were stage 2.
I’m wondering a few things;
1. Can they fi a lumpectomy using twilight sedation?
2. Is radiation always necessary
3. Should you always have a 2nd opinion?
This group seems so well informed. So glad to have found it!

Hello
I had lumpectomy with Prop, Versed and Fentanyl.
2. I was diagnosed with ILC and was offered 5 days or 16 days of radiation. Studies for 5 days have only been done for up to 5 years post. I am a healthy active woman who plans on being around longer than 72 years old so opted for 16 treatments.
3. I had opinions from 3 hospitals-surgeon MGH, two oncologists from DFCI, and radiation from BWH.
That was my choice. Most of my family decided who have had breast cancer (and there is a lot) decided to forego second opinions. They are content with their choice, and have done fine.
I wish you the best in making your decision.
I had a lumpectomy almost two weeks ago. 8mm IDC stage 1B. Staging of a tumor comes after the lumpectomy though a biopsy does provide a lot about the type of cancer.
I am waiting for the Oncotype result as that will determine the treatment. I will have radiation for sure, but may need chemo depending on the Oncotype. Both of my sisters had the same tumor markers as mine, but the oncotype test was not available to them then. One sister had radiation and the other didn’t. The one that didn’t had a 3mm stage 1A tumor. It was suggested that radiation would do more harm because of the size, stage and location of the area.
She is 6 years out and took AI for 5 years. Both are doing well.
We all have a lot of questions. Research, this discussion board and my medical team were the most helpful sources. Wishing you the best as you navigate through this journey.
1. No idea about twilight
2. They won’t know how much radiation until the pathology report is back
3. I did not get a second opinion
I was very similar to yours- DCIs was 4cm but idc was 7mm( too small for an onco test. I saw an oncologist surgeon, plastic surgeon, medical oncologist and radiologist oncologist… take notes and journal things . I had lumpectomy and reconstruction on both breast. 15 days radiation with booster and currently on an AI drug
I was 60 when I had the surgery- 62 now
My understanding is that anything over 5mm is suitable for the Oncotype. Mine is 8mm and being tested.
I was told mine was too small …. Interesting 🤔
