Excessive mucus production in the upper respiratory system and throat.
Good Afternoon, I'm looking for some treatment advice for my post covid chronic condition. I had covid Jan 2021, I was put on a respirator twice that year ( first time for 9 days, second time later that year for 5 days). My lungs were scarred and damaged by covid and my capacity has diminished to 46%. I developed a cough due to excessive mucus production that always occurs in the morning and randomly though out the day. The coughing fits will last 5 -10 minutes which can include a sense of drowning or a gag reflex. I am not able to identify a common trigger for these fits with the exception that bending over for a period of time or physical exertion can be a trigger. The mucus produced is clear with bubbles and there is no pain associated with the cough. I been tested for allergies, acid reflex, have had the Clarifix and Rhinaer procedures done (that was a waste) and have been prescribed many nasal sprays . I have seen 3 ENT's, 2 pulmonologist and my Primary so far with no relief. I'm finding the medical community I have encountered are unable to help me manage this chronic condition. I see many on you on this support group have a similar lasting condition. I'm hoping for some insight on a treatment you have received that has relieved your condition so that I can make suggests to my doctors. Thank you in advance for you information, John Porter

I had COVID 2 years ago and it's still with me too. The ENT said it would take a long time to get over but I think it is here to stay. Must be permanent damage but I wonder if it is damage to lungs or sinuses or throat or what.

1 ReactionI had Covid in Dec.2021 and the constant mucus in my throat has finally begun to lessen.
It is still a constant but no longer causes me to choke although it definitely worsens during allergy season and, sometimes, I cannot talk without coughing.
But, given all of this, it has actually become more manageable and is no longer a constant interference- so there is hope - eventually.

2 ReactionsIn 2018 I moved from the Midwest to California and began experiencing more allergic-like reactions than I had experienced in decades and some additional phlegm. I caught Covid-19 in July 2022. Subsequently, I've experienced excessive phlegm all the time along with all the disgusting snorting, sniffing and swallowing that goes along with it and the embarrassment of having to do this in public at times. I have gotten some limited relief from an OTC product called Mucinex which thins the mucus so I don't cough as much or swallow as much. On my own initiative, I started taking allergy shots nine months ago for the possibility that some of this could be allergy related and I found, through the testing, that I am allergic to many things. The suggestion by my PCP to use the Mucinex was useful but my ENT doctor suggested nothing for the phlegm. So, I'll keep using the Mucinex and continue with the allergy shots in the hopes of getting more relief.
Have you taken a spirometer test at the pulmologist? I had that test, and I got a prescribed inhaler which cleared up my excess mucus and improved my lung function.

3 ReactionsI plan to do a follow up with the pulmonologist soon. What inhaler did your doctor prescribe that helped you?
In my case I believe it is my sinuses & post nasal drip collecting in my throat & coating my vocal chords. My lungs are clear. What I've taken that has helped the most:
Trelegy oral inhaler, Xhance (special fluticasone inhaler) & albuterol
I don't think I have allergies that caused this, but it does worsen with allergy seasons. I am pretty sure this is Long Covid stuff! I still wake up choking in the night & have to go cough/spit out the mucous & use my albuterol.
I use the Trelegy inhaler for COPD and I still have the symptoms but I agree that it's coming from sinuses and post nasal drip rather than my lungs. When it collects around my vocal chords, my voice is different and my words are not coherent. I think it's definitely Long COVID and I doubt it will ever go away.

1 ReactionI have exactly the same symptoms for over a year. I've tried allergy meds, and they don't make a difference. Stress makes it worse. I'm using Albuterol at night, when it's the worst. I also am taking Sudafed sinus 12 hour. Also Flonase.
I will explore the Trelegy oral inhaler. I would agree with you, it's long Covid, same for me at night.

1 ReactionAlso look into the XHance nasal inhaler. I really think that's what helped to clear up the sinus issue. Best of luck!!
I too, have had copious amounts of mucus for over four years since having Covid19 four times and received four vaccinations. I wake up at night and have to clear the mucus which continues throughout the day. The mucus color ranges from milky white to yellow to celery green. I use a sinus rinse and a prescription nasal spray. My PCM has ordered both lung and sinus xrays that show nothing out of the ordinary. Feeling frustrated!
