Problems after chlamydia treatment

Posted by sparky1080 @sparky1080, Jul 24, 2021

I was infected with chlamydia at the end of January this year, and was tested mid-March and finished treatment early April (10 days of doxycycline).

I didn’t really have any symptoms besides some thicker discharge which went away, so I wasn’t really aware that I was infected.

Ever since being treated I’m experiencing weird symptoms, yet my tests are always negative.

I had Weird discharge (thick cervical mucus) and blood on may 7 (after finishing antibiotics at the beginning of April), which was the same day I tested again to ensure the infection was gone, test was negative.

I’ve been experiencing the following symptoms:

1. Lower abdominal pain by uterus /bladder, feels inflamed, sometimes feels like stabbing, urethra pain, also had some lower back pain on the left

2. Pain and itch inside on the left

3. Pain in muscle around pubic bone/groin - hurts when I exercise, sometimes when walking

4. Lack of vaginal discharge, some improvement with gynoflor (at one point it was very dry, small chunks)

I keep getting pelvic exams and ultrasounds and the doctor keep saying everything is fine. I was prescribed gynoflor and fluomizin as she thought maybe it was irritation from yeast after the antibiotics.

I went to another doctor and he did an ultrasound and found fluid in my cul de sac behind Uterus, either from the infection or a ruptured cyst and that it could be causing the pain. He also said my body should absorb it . But this doesn’t explain all of the symptoms.

My Period has been shorter lately (may and June) only 3 days long, usually 4/5.

I’m really worried and getting extremely anxious and crying every day over this. I just want it to go away. If anyone has any advice or has had something similar happen it would be great to hear from you.

it’s been awhile since i’ve posted an update regarding my experience with it in 2021, but unfortunately my sex life hasn’t been the same since then, seems like i’m a lot dryer than how i used to be, and there’s just a lot of friction involved. i do use lube and it does help but it just sucks because now certain positions are more painful than others to be able to enjoy it. I feel bad for my bf but he’s understanding of my situation, i feel like my sex life will never return to normal, but besides that. i do still have that itchiness & really bad cramps before my period and sometimes a bit of a burn like peeing hurts sometimes but it wasn’t as bad as when i had it before, i think i was told that when you have chlamyida and if you let it go on for even a couple weeks without treatment..it can do serious damage to your walls and uterus, and because i wasn’t aware of it, i let it linger for maybe 2 an a half months im not too sure, but ive heard it takes years for your walls to heal or build back up, but thats coming from someone else and im not sure if thats 100% accurate. but wouldn’t it be nice to know lol

Hi I’m having these same issues. Do u have any updates or more info about pelvic walls issues? I was pretty asymptomatic/ didn’t have most of the common chlamydia symptoms so I was untreated for 3 months until my cramping became so bad that I did all kinds of tests just in case. Now it’s been over a week since I’ve finished treatment but all of my vaginal region has weirdly been swollen and sore on the outside ever since treatment. I am able to get wet but penetrative sex feels like a sharp pain in my uterus and no position feels normal or good anymore. I’ve had this pain ever since the chlamydia symptoms worsened and I was diagnosed. Does anyone have info on why / how long sex can hurt after treatment? I’ve done ultrasounds and exams and the doctors say nothing looks enflamed all looks normal.

Hey all, recently went to the obgyn for the first time (19) because I was experiencing pain during intercourse (like a stabbing pain, not from friction). Went in, they did a pelvic exam and a swab. My swab came back positive for chlamydia, and even though I got the test results they made me wait a day to talk to my physician about them which I thought was crazy given a positive test. They prescribed me doxycycline the following day over the phone, and I’ve been taking it consistently. However as I’m nearing the end of my prescription I’m having the worst UTI-like symptoms. I’ve never been prone to UTIs or yeast infections, and when I was first prescribed doxycycline I wasn’t experiencing these problems. I called today and rather than telling me my physician wasn’t available, the receptionist had me embarrass myself and explain the whole situation to her so she could email my doctor. It was just the way she did it, I had to tell her I had chlamydia and I’m having trouble going to the bathroom. Which I’m sure they are used to hearing, but as a patient it is humiliating. For me it was hard to deal with too because I have no one to talk to about this so it just feels really lonely when no one can give you an answer and you just have to cope. Going on to day two of the severe discomfort, any recommendations on what to look in to? Or who to talk to? Or how to stand up for myself lol?

Hi, @dipkins, and welcome. Like you, I've found myself unexpectedly explaining my health concerns to someone other than my doctor, and I know how uncomfortable that can feel. Even though it was difficult, you did the right thing by calling and advocating for your health.

I'd like to invite @bluecat and @puzzle836 to the conversation, as they've had similar experiences and may be able to offer some words of encouragement.

According to Mayo Clinic’s article on chlamydia, it sounds like it can take some time for the infection to clear up, even after starting treatment. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/chlamydia/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20355355

How are you feeling today? Has your doctor gotten in touch with you about your symptoms?
