Suggestions please—lower back pain interrupting sleep
I’m hoping for suggestions from fellow sufferers who can’t sleep or keep waking up from lower back pain caused by arthritis. I can’t take nsaids, and Tylenol doesn’t help at all. Tried otc sleep aids that don’t work. Will be having hip replacement soon and doc says that may help with back pain but seems contrary to his diagnosis of arthritis in lower back. Stretching and chiropractic have not helped. I have an adjustable bed frame and use that to change position but that’s not helping any more. I use pillows under or between legs to relieve pressure but that lasts only a minute or two. Just bought some Salon Pas to try on lower back and hoping I’ll get some decent sleep. I wake up at least 6-7 times a night in pain and have a hard time getting back to sleep. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you might have.

I find that doing weight exercises 3x a week and drinking 12oz of tart cherry juice at night has helped. I saw an article that said that 12oz tart cherry juice was equal to 600mg of an NSAID. It also contains natural melatonin. I sometimes take a child's dose of melatonin and a magnesium citrate gummy at bed time. I also do exercises that stretch the psoas muscles to relieve lumbar arthritis pain. I'm not a health care professional so this is purely anecdotal.
My wife has seen back specialist, pain clinic, had MRI and CT Scan. Recommend either pain clinic or back surgery; she totally declined back surgery, especially after six hip surgeries.
Did you look into a steroid injection? I needed only one to get rid of the excruciating pain after I over worked my back running around in an airport. I'm 83 years old.
why 6 surgeries?
hope to find cherry juice
So do I! So far no luck.
(1 & 2)A Total bilateral first surgery, dropped at Rehab. Could not do anything because the femur nerve got compressed in left leg. Nine months out with heavy medication the nerve started to regenerate. (3) Right hip was fractured and pelvic from being dropped in the shower, right hip revised and started taking her off the heavy narcotics. (4) Five years out came down with Cobalt / chromium poision in Left hip. (5) Four years later Cobalt / Chromium poison with two different staph infections in Right hip; complete unit removed and madical spacer implanted. Nine week later they implanted a whole new unit. It has been 3 years now and Cobalt went from 17.6 down to 0.03 . Honestly, I really do not know how we made it through all of it ! She gets around but not well and is only 65 years old. If we had it to do over I do not think she would have had any of it done!
Hi Danny. Are you saying Debbie was dropped twice?! Once is inexcusable! I’m so sorry for her suffering.
Hi, yes steroid injections have helped me since 2016. I’ve been lucky that 3 had excellent results. First one stopped sciatic pain agony. General lumbar pain taken away by the next 2 shots. Then #4 was a terrible failure and extra pain so got an electric scooter to get mobile and out of the house. Just recently had an extensive nerve ablation, some recovery to go but it seems to help so far.
See a reputable clinic and get an epidural before you go nuts with pain.
