What supplements help Osteopenia, Osteoporosis?

Posted by grace1215 @grace1215, Feb 4, 2020

Hi, I am a new member here and wanted to find out if anyone has used AlgaeCal Plus & Strontium Citrate for Osteopenia? I have had this condition for 10 years now plus five years with Osteoarthritis of the hip which I am hoping will help not only my hip but the DEXA scan came up with Osteopenia scores.

Please do your research regarding vitamin D. It’s my understanding (from medical professionals) that you should not take calcium without D3 and K2. They are needed for absorption and to carry the calcium to the right places and not to your arteries.
Best wishes,
Cindy

I wish I had known this before taking calcium supplements! I had some major plaque buildup as a result, and did a urine 24 hour test, and I was just spilling out calcium! Always do your research there is so much the doctors never tell you! Such as if you take Kral, Leah, and you stop. Your bones will demineralize, and your bones will be worse than when you started taking it. My doctor was so dismissive when I brought that up to her!

Hi...I'm 82, on Prolia now for about 7 years and I'm taking D3, Magnesium, E and want to know what type/strength of K2 is best. I don't take calcium supplements. I have osteoporosis and have fractured my spine several times. Ablation has been recommended to me for my lumbar area since even after kyphoplasty last year, I'm still in pain. All I take are 2 Tylenols each morning and no other meds.

I'd save your money. The OA in your hip will not "heal" itself no matter what you buy. Please go see an orthopedic surgeon (the best you can access) before you start wasting money. Most supplements need a baseline blood test done before you start doing things that have consequences.

I have the same story. I refuse the meds. I do hormone replacement therapy pellets. Vitamin D, K, boron, Calcium, Magnesium and a multivitamin for 50plus. Make sure not to take more than 4000 of vitamin d a day. I also use the collagen. My numbers have remained stable. The echo light scan showed better bone results than the DEXA scan. Make sure to lift weights and walk. If you have any advice for me please share. I am always interested. I learned so much from this site.

I am trying to get all the right vitamins. Could you tell me if you take boron separately and what dosage? Also, what do you take for a multivitamin? I take everything you mention and I’m looking for a decent multivitamin. Also considering adding curcumin or grape seed extract. Thanks so much for sharing information.

It’s best to have your Vitamin D level checked first. Many people are deficient or at the low end of range. Educate yourself on the importance of this vitamin, not only for bones but many other things, including cancer. Once you know where you stand you can determine how much you need.

I like this one that is D3 and K2 combined. I take two a day.

Thank you. My doc advised me to double up on my D3 last year and told me my recent labs showed good level of D3. I take 2000 each day. So just looking for the K2 to add. When I run out of the D3, I'll go to a combined with K2 as you did.

I’m not sure your situation but have been on fosomax. Alendronate for 3 years with no real improvement. Cleveland stated I will not gain bone density from this. I haven’t yet seen them except virtual & them seeing my labs and Dexa scores. I haven’t a clue how each person or drug works, but sharing my experience & history for what it’s worth.

I do appreciate reading others journeys.
Good luck

Have your DEXA's stayed the same during the 3. years on Fosamax? If you won't gain bone density, what is the benefit to taking Fosamax? Did they say why you won't gain density? My Dr explained that because old bone isn't sloughed off while on Fosamax, that is what shows the gains in bone density on DEXA.

I alternate my calcium between Citracal calcium citrate and New Chapter algae sourced calcium. Citracal has no vitamin K while New Chapter contains 45mcg of K2. (It also contains K3 but I couldn't find supplements of that.). To supplement K2 when I take Citracal, I take Solaray K2 which has 50mcg; this brand is highly rated on Amazon.
