I encourage you to ask questions of your transplant team. I understand not wanting to risk any damage to your new kidney. You want to honor the gift of life. At the same time, be sure to work with your transplant team and endocrinologist to ensure adequate bone health. Lifestyle approaches help, but in some cases may not be enough. I would ask questions like:
- Can I maintain my healthy bones through lifestyle alone? Like diet, exercise, supplements? What would work in MY case?
- How with my bone density be monitored to know if things are working or not?
- When might it be necessary to take medications?
- There are many medication options. Which are best for my kidney and my bones?
