Neuropathy - No cure but can we prevent it?
All of us with neuropathy are focused on what we can do to provide relief for our symptoms but maybe we should also take a look at finding ways to prevent neuropathy. I thought we might be able to glean some information from this upcoming webinar.

Thursday, Feb 29, 2024 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CST
The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy (FPN) presents a one-hour program on a brand-new topic – the prevention of peripheral neuropathy. Please join us as FPN’s Patient Education Advisor, Shanna Patterson, MD, MS, an attending neurologist at Mount Sinai Health System, shares information about how people can prevent neuropathy. We cannot stop our bodies from deteriorating! Remember Jim Fix the runner from the 1980’s? He was one of the first to advocate and write a book about running I believe. He unfortunately died at age 52 from an MI. The breakdown of your body tissues is normal the aging process. I don’t want to be a Debbie downer but our society is not setup to deal with extended old age. Considering that less than 50% of retiring people have sufficient funds for retirement let alone an extended old age. I don’t want to continue to suffer with chronic pain longer than my body wants to and trying to reverse the aging process after age 50 is useless.
Loma Linda neuropathy clinic in Cal. is a good place, also for info too Calgary neuropathy in Canada
I’ve had “peripheral neuropathy “ for years, burning, itching pain fatigue, I thought I was crazy, always checking the dogs for bugs, shampooing, cleaning. My brother called me from out of state and told me his diagnosis, his feet! I have it all over my body, I’ve literally scratched my skin off, bruised myself and this s while taking gabapentin and duloxetine. My face and sinus pressure hurts so bad, I also have rheumatoid arthritis, low factor they say but I’m taking meds for that. I don’t know what’s causing my headaches, body aches and all my other symptoms but sometimes I feel like I just want to crawl out of my skin! Before covid was running 3-5 miles a day, doing Zumba, now I feel like an old lady and it’s a push just to do a few simple chores and exercise a little mostly floor exercises.
Hi @baciobabe, Welcome to Connect. You certainly have a lot on your health plate. I can't imagine how difficult that must be. I don't think you are alone feeling older. My wife told me I walked like an old man when I was in my 50s and here I am in my early 80s and still walking like an old man 🙃. I shared my neuropathy journey in another discussion along with other members here - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/310341/.
I thought you might like to scan through some of the discussions to learn what others have shared. I did a few searches to help you find discussions where members mentioned similar symptoms and shared the links that list the results below.

Have you tried any complementary or alternative therapies or treatments?
And it won’t go away I’ve don’t it all since I wrote here
I can’t sit very long , I can’t stand very long , water trickling feeling all the time , buzzing like popcorn effect when you stand in front of your microwave and here it popping that’s the fireworks 💥 that’s going off in legs , feet , back and arms relentless
I have all that and even explain how you feel and the fireworks that’s going off , 🤔 that’s the look I get, or the play doctor comes on , Lol until someone is in your shoes you can explain away all day long and get nowhere.. The Mcgills pain scale with Spinal Arachnoiditis is a 48-50 all the time it never shuts off .. SA pain is worst then a women having a baby without the shot , cutting your finger off with no local it’s absolutely Horrendous
Then you have the days that skyrockets and everything is turned up to 100 and it last for hours into days .. all I can say is God must have plans for me to endure this much survival in a daily basis , God bless you 🙏🏻
Fight everyone don’t give and stay moving as much as you can , you can do it
I feel for you.
I’m same way with neuropathy, and some different symptoms, but bad just the same.
Feel like an old lady also, don’t go anywhere , balance bad, get tired easily when out.
Been getting worse over past 12 years.
Well, that’s hogwash. There is such a thing as non-diabetic PN. Get a genetic test to prove it.
Hi…I imagine this isn’t a new revelation but given your brother also has neuropathy, did you do any genetic testing? I’ve had neuropathy for 8 yrs….feel like a 62 yr old in 80 yr olds body. I still walk 2-3 miles a day but it’s getting harder…leg fatigue , aches and pains etc. my balance is bad too. My arms are starting to feel it now too…tremors in hands. Do you experience any shakiness in your hands?
I look in the mirror and ask “ what the hell happened “?
A couple pieces of advice…keep moving and second, try not let your mind hold you back on trying to do something….force yourself to do it…accomplishing the task is fuel for the next “to do”. I hope you can find relief.
