What supplements help Osteopenia, Osteoporosis?

Posted by grace1215 @grace1215, Feb 4, 2020

Hi, I am a new member here and wanted to find out if anyone has used AlgaeCal Plus & Strontium Citrate for Osteopenia? I have had this condition for 10 years now plus five years with Osteoarthritis of the hip which I am hoping will help not only my hip but the DEXA scan came up with Osteopenia scores.

That is really good news .
I will incorporate Algaecal D3 and the Collagen into my daily routine.
Walking I do a lot , it comes with my work and I also like to hike and as the weather warms up I will be doing more of that.
My diet is high in Calcium, I eat no processed foods or sugars , time will tell, but I am positive I can turn things around.
I will not go on the Prolia.
I am currently watching a very informative podcast from Margie Bissinger with Dr R Keith McCormick who has written a great book that seems to be very hard to fine called Great Bones - Taking Control Of Your Osteoporosis
You give others hope that things can turn around.

Thank you for sharing your journey. I was just diagnosed with osteo from my Dexiscan. 2/2025 . My vit D was at 27. ( Seemed very low but she wasn’t worried. My Dr recommended a multivitamin, a calcium supplement and Fosomax. I am hesitant about the
Fosomax . Do you have any alternatives or studies supporting its issues?

I’m not sure your situation but have been on fosomax. Alendronate for 3 years with no real improvement. Cleveland stated I will not gain bone density from this. I haven’t yet seen them except virtual & them seeing my labs and Dexa scores. I haven’t a clue how each person or drug works, but sharing my experience & history for what it’s worth.

I do appreciate reading others journeys.
Good luck

Found it today , I received an email from Dr McCormick and Amazon here in Canada has the book labeled as something entirely different and he is unable to get Amazon to correct it.

I was taking AlgaeCal Plus for 2 years. My latest DEXA scan showed lower T scores. I talked to a support person at AlgaeCal and she was at a loss why my results after taking the AlgaeCal supplement was so much worse. Prior to starting AlgaeCal, I had been on a calcium citrate supplement plus taking D3, Magnesium, K, C, B, and Omega 3. My DEXA numbers were low but holding steady. My Doctors wanted me to take Fosamax, Prolia, Bonita, etc. but I always wanted to try to do it my own way. That is no longer an option for me. I will have to start on an osteoporosis medication soon but I am still researching which 'poison ' will be the best option. I see a rheumatologist in May.

Please do your research regarding vitamin D. It’s my understanding (from medical professionals) that you should not take calcium without D3 and K2. They are needed for absorption and to carry the calcium to the right places and not to your arteries.

I took Fosomax once and it gave me horrible acid reflux that i had to go to Gi doctor. I refuse to take it again and do not want to take Prolia. I started hormone replacement therapy at low dose, collagen, walking more and Pilates. I think i will try Algeacal plus. Dexa in August .
Any other thoughts appreciated

I have the same story. I refuse the meds. I do hormone replacement therapy pellets. Vitamin D, K, boron, Calcium, Magnesium and a multivitamin for 50plus. Make sure not to take more than 4000 of vitamin d a day. I also use the collagen. My numbers have remained stable. The echo light scan showed better bone results than the DEXA scan. Make sure to lift weights and walk. If you have any advice for me please share. I am always interested. I learned so much from this site.

Another fact I forgot to say was that my endocrinologist wanted to put me on prolia years ago!!! I can only imagine the horse I would’ve gone through. I am now 68 and have not broken anything thank God.

@grace1215 here is an article about DEXA scans and how taking strontium affects them.

I was told by the endocrinologist who I went to for osteoporosis that AlgaeCal is no better than taking calcium and vitamin D.

I am reading the book “Strong Women, Strong Bones” and I highly recommend it. It was recommended to my sister by her doctor.
You are lucky to still be able to get some control over this. Some of the recommended exercises cannot be done once you have osteoporosis because there is too much chance of a fracture.

Alge or Coral calcium is great. So is Magnesium Oxide, Boron and Vitamin D.

I have heard the same about Strontium & have stayed away from it. Strontium's larger size can affect bone density readings on DEXA scans, potentially skewing results. Calcium (Ca) is regarded as a macronutrient in most forms of life, while strontium (Sr), another alkaline earth metal, is not (yet) considered essential in biological systems. Calcium does more than build strong bone. It also helps our muscles, heart, and nerves work properly. If we do not get enough calcium in our diets, our body takes the calcium we need from our bones. Over time, this process makes bones weaker.

I also remembering reading somewhere when you stop Strontium it can leave holes or gaps in your bones, but I couldn't find this when I just searched. I am not an expert on this, I am just citing what I have found on the internet. I would be careful taking Strontium though and make sure your doctor agrees with it.
