Loss of voice after Arikayce nebulizer
I am 70 years old, still working part time. I was started on triple antibiotics a year ago. My sputum is still positive after 1 year of triple therapy. I started on Arikayce nebulizer last week. 4 days after, in the morning I lost my voice. Could'nt even whisper or cough. No pain or difficulty breathing! My ID doc said to hold nebulizer for 1 week. I can whisper now but so difficult at work.
Any advice on how and when to restart the nebulizer?

@saminatt Here is a discussion among people who have taken Arikayce - perhaps you will find some helpful suggestions there.
Have you asked the doctor for any recommendations regaringd restarting?
Yes. She said to hold it for a week. I have to wait until next Monday to see if my voice comes back.
I had the same issue when I started Arikayce. I'd have to stop for a week then resume. I'd be okay for awhile, then I'd totally lose my voice. So frustrating! My doctor was worried that I'd become resistant to the Arikayce if I stopped so often so he reduced the dose to every other day. I'd get hoarse occasionally but I never truly lose my voice after that. I'm not sure your doctor would consider doing that but it wouldn't hurt to ask!
Thats really good to know. My ID will not restart until I get my voice back and she said I can do every other day. Thanks for the follow up. Not able to talk is a torture by itself. Hope I get my voice back at a reasonable time. Did you start Arikayce at the evening/nighttime?
I always did it in the evening, as was recommended.
I have never taken Arikayce, but I get hoarse from time to time from my daily inhalers. My pulmonologist recommended using cough drops containing a large amount of pectin to coat my throat to reduce the problem, and it works. I have even used them before 7% saline when I had a sore throat. Halls' Throat Ease and old-fashioned Cherry Ludens (without menthol) are my favorites.
After a weeklong holiday from Arikayce, I restarted it yesterday. I was calmer and was breathing better. I rinsed and gargled with salt water after. No major loss of voice. I have a room air cleaner next to me while I am on Arikayce. The air cleaner changed color indicating it detected something in the air. After 45 mins it changed back to normal. Anybody know if the steam coming out is ok for the people in the room and also if the exhaled air affects pregnant people?
My air filter does the same with levalbuterol, budesonide and the inhaled meds for pseudomonas. I have just always assumed I should use these away from other people and pets.
I got hoarse after 4 days of Arikayce. the other 3 antibiotics cause extreme fatigue. My doctor said that the Arikayce is a remarkable drug and that it should not be stopped at intervals because it works better than the 3 antibiotic regimen. So just have to have a lot of patience and many naps. Fortunately no other side effects other than these two. I have more peace of mind under a good doctors care than worrying each time I cough up blood.
I got my voice back somewhat after 1 week off of Arikayce. I did restart the nebulizer 5 days ago. Only slight hoarseness not like complete loss of voice that i had before! As my doctor and care team suggested I am sticking to night time like 7 at night and also rinsing my mouth after. So far so good! Thank you for sharing your experience! Long way to go!
