I an 74 and have had this problem off and on for several years. It comes an goes. 2 years ago the Dermatologist ordered "magic mouthwash" . The formula is on the internet. It is mainly an antacid, a decongestant, and lidocaine. It does not cure but it is major relief. You swish and spit several times a day. It stopped the pain and burning so I could eat. This is what is in it. “Magic Mouthwash” Combine equal parts: -liquid diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl) -aluminum hydroxide/magnesium hydroxide (Maalox; do NOT use Kaopectate) Shake/combine well and swish/gargle with 5-10mL, then spit, every 4-6 hours. Wait 30 mins before eating or drinking." It is only for 10 days. Like I said it is not a cure. When I used it last time the problem went away. Now its back. My current doctor never heard of it. But she did order it for me and it has helped so I can eat. This time it didn't go away. I see her next month to try an figure it out. It least this is a good temporary fix. My insurance did not cover the prescription, but it was only around $14 at Walgreens. Hope this helps you

I too suffered with burning mouth several years. A smart PA at emergency room had my burning stopped within an hour with a recommendation for an esophagus scope which I got. Diagnosed with gastritis w hypetplasia, reflux, and Barrett’s. Treatment with ppi and sucralfate liquid for a month and the burning started decreasing. After 2 months able to stop pain pills. After 5 months I have had to switch ppi’s couple of times. Notice if I take a steroid or antibiotic for infection in other areas that will cause some burning in mouth so must irritate my esophagus. I do dissolve pepsid complete in my mouth couple of times a day if I have break thru burning in mouth. I do all the other recommendations on line for reflux, wedge pillow to raise upper body, eat small low fat to fat free meals, deleted fatty foods, don’t eat after 4 etc. Main thing is patience. Took a good month to get the slightest improvement then pretty quickly improved more. I recommend anyone with burning mouth get your esophagus scope from specialist.
