Can PMR (Polymyalgia Rheumatica) be induced by vaccine?

I have a teacher friend who got PMR after the covid vaccine. Even her doctor admitted it was probably from the vaccine. She was miserable for quite some time. My granddaughter received the covid shot( I want to say she was 8 years old). She ended up at Yale with suspected lupus nephritis and had fluid around all her organs. My son kicks himself to this day. He thought he was doing the right thing. My granddaughter still is seen and that was at least 4 years ago now. I think for the majority of people it was/is safe, but for many it has initiated something dormant in our DNA that comes to the fore and causes much havoc. I don't see why anyone should go all hush-hush about the possible, or even likely cause of their auto-immune condition for political reasons. Scientific inquiry is more important than politics.

My PMR came on just after the flu jab too. I wish I’d of known the risks I was taking. I was only told that I might have a fever for a few days and the muscle might hurt by the injection site.

OMG if I could turn back the clock I never would have the flu jab or the Covid vaccine ever again. We should be warned and given the option with clear advice just the same as we are when we are put on any medication. Tablets come with a list of all the known side-effects so why doesn’t the flu jab.

I agree totally with you. I've never had a flu shot because I had a friend die from Guillain-Barré Syndrome and also because they are only 18% effective in preventing the flu! I developed PMR after my second Pfizer vaccination and will never get another COVID vaccine, or perhaps any other vaccine! I had the old shingles shot years ago and then the new one, Shringrix, came out soon thereafter. I think I will pass on it.

Here in the UK we have what is known as the yellow card system where you can report side-effects from any medications. It’s not well known that this exists but if everybody reported it maybe the manufacturers may be forced to do something about it. There should be a warning when you have the flu shot just the same as when you buy any over-the-counter medication or get a prescription. I am really suffering as a result with my PMR to the point where some days I just don’t want to carry on anymore. All because I was encouraged to have the flu shot for my own health. It sucks

Not a flu shot but 4 days after getting the 2nd COVID vax for the variant before last (in the US) - this was in early July of last year. I woke up 4 days later with horrible pain and stiffness in my shoulders, clavicals and pelvic area. I thought it was yet another lifting injury and didn't explore other potential causes until PT failed to help. I self diagnosed and finally got in to see a rheumatologist to confirm, although my C-reactive and sed rate blookwork remains normal. I think mine was due to a confluence of events that caused my immune system to say enough. I got COVID in Aug '23 and had to take 2 rounds of Paxlovid to get rid of it, then I got a really bad ear infection that would not go away. I'm a lap swimmer so there was no way I was going to get a hole punched in my eardrum, so I was on just about every allergy drug there is for 9 months. The ear infection had just cleared in late June '24, when I got the jab and here I am.

One other thing, during the time I was suspicious of PMR but before officially being diagnosed, I got a flu shot. It knocked me down for 4 days. My rheumatologist told me no more vaxs until maybe this fall and that's if I can taper off prednisone... so fingers and toes crossed!

I hope you get better soon! Although it's a double edgeed sword, prednisone has been a lifesaver for me.

If your doctor agrees that it was a reaction to a vaccination, ask them if they could report it to their professional reporting system. My understanding is that medical practitioners have a reporting system separate from the VAERS database, which is meant for the consumer.

My PMR was set off by the second shingles vaccination - 6 years ago and I am still dealing with the fall out, not just PMR.

Getting the word out about reporting to VAERS or other science based agencies about any adverse vaccine reactions is the appropriate way to address concerns about vaccines.
Asking in this forum for information regarding how to properly address post vaccine reactions is entirely appropriate.
Creating hysteria by trying to connect vaccine administration to the onset of PMR, regardless of who might else support your position is not appropriate because those that can actually look at the evidence are not in the loop of trying to find real evidenced based answers.
A simple statement such as " I had such and such a vaccine, and now have PMR and would like to know which scientific based agency should I contact to tell them of my experience" would have been the appropriate way to handle this rather than turning the concern into a social media conspiracy theory.
Addressing the issue to the appropriate agencies is not being " hush , hush" it is acting in a responsible and mature manner and will likely glean more positive results than how the issue was dealt with by the author of this concern at the outset of this discussion.
PMR and GCA are challenges to those afflicted, working with those that can use evidenced based science to find solutions will always achieve better results than those undermining good delivery of care by positing anecdotal evidence to substantiate a position or theory . Which will only lead to fear and mistrust of vaccines.
