Controlling Tinnitus: What works for you?

Posted by scottk @scottk, Jul 1, 2019

Hello: Has anyone on this site had any luck with controlling tinnitus? I see certain things advertised but always sceptical. Any thoughts/ideas?

@scottk mines a high pitch sound! I had to get hearing aids and was told they probably wouldn’t help the sounds but they do and It is so nice not hearing the noise WHEN I do wear my hearing aids.

Hearing aids have been wonderful to block out about 90% of the Tinnitus in both ears. They are an adjustment.

Tinnitus had affected my hearing greatly mostly with family and when I would be at church.

I personally put it off too long getting them, but, I am so glad that I did.

Praying for you as I know how distracting Tinnitus can be. Blessings to you....

I already had tinnitus from concerts back in the day lol. It got worse with antidepressant use. Sadly I need the antidepressants.

🫣 nada- if you can handle white noise on top of your tinnitus, that’s the only option given- There’s nothing you just have to deal with it- Mine is at a Level 12- Overwhelming good luck with yours-

It has been said that the worst type of tinnitus to endure is the low rumbling like a truck running in your head. I get it! I have both low pitched as high pitched sounds. I can’t find any masking noise to eliminate the low pitch, (
( that is like the last two octaves on a piano). Does anyone know of any masking of that nature?

It’s difficult for me to understand how hearing aids will block tinnitus at night- . when around outside Incoming sounds tinnitus is not as bad. Our brain monitors that- tinnitus it’s part of the brain connection function.

But at night time when I’m trying to sleep, Tinnitus is a level 12- And white noise, black noise purple noise is just much more incoming tinnitus😏. And I can not imagine wearing hearing aids to bed to help cut the tinnitus sound -Hearing aids work that way- ????

OK when you wear your hearing aids, they help the tinnitus mostly you’re wearing them during the day hence surround sound eliminates tinnitus due to the fact that the brain function is monitoring what we hear
Now my question is at night when you’re sleeping do you wear your hearing aids? I can’t imagine that.

@alli4 The doctor said I could try them but I probably wouldn’t have enough battery for day and night. I wish I could as I lay down right now typing the high pitch is so loud I can hear it louder than my wife’s Cpap . Once my back incisions are healed and get to wear I can sleep comfortably I’m going to try them at night

alli4, It is not recommended to sleep in hearing aids and I do not sleep in them at night.

Your hearing changes after you get hearing aids....brain connection as you mentioned. Your brain adjusts to your new way of hearing.

I actually thought I had more hearing loss after the first few weeks wearing them. When I would take them out at night, my hearing was dimished more. This is normal. It is the brain-hearing connection getting use to the hearing aids.

I can't explain this to you. I honestly do not notice the tinnitus as much at night after I take them out.

If you eat very salty foods or a lot of caffeine it ramps up the tinnitus. It depends on how much tinnitus you have. I had a salty lunch yesterday (me bad!) and my tinnitus is ramped up in my right ear which is my worst ear with tinnitus this morning....even with the hearing aids in. It will usually diminish after I have worn them for a while today.

I didn't understand it either until the Audiologist explained it to me.

I hope this helps.

Blessings & Prayers....
