Over-medicated?

I have recently opened my eyes to the huge possibility that I am being greatly over-medicated by my psychiatrist. There are many reasons for this. Many different “symptoms” started popping up over the past year and a half. He has been my psychiatrist for 9 years. I recently have been studying the medications that I have been prescribed. Things for epilepsy, Parkinson’s, seizures, schizophrenia, bipolar, and much more. None of which even he has ever diagnosed me with. I have MDD, GAD, PTSD, some OCD very much controlled. Also TD, from an incorrect drug for my diagnoses as well. I certainly have nothing against folks who have all of those illnesses, but I would like to be treated for what I do have. I’m extremely hurt, and feel very alone in this area right now. I have dealt with my actual diagnoses for 40 years. I was 22 when it began. Because of my husband’s job, we moved a lot, so I’ve had several psychiatrists over the years. I have never been on this many drugs, or felt so crummy in mind and body. All of my teeth need to be removed this week, because of the horrible dry mouth from a drug that my current psychiatrist does not remember why he put me on it. The current dentist I have said that she can tell that I brush and take care of my teeth, because my gums are perfectly fine. Each day more roots of my teeth are showing. There is really nothing that can be done, but me now having to wear dentures.
I’m not sure where to go from here. I’m wondering if any of you have gone through something like this, and what you did about it. I really liked this doctor. He was so nice. Now I’m so hurt. I’m in a state of shock. I don’t understand what he was doing at all. Every time I had a rough or rotten day, I was given another drug. I feel so dumb that I didn’t get it. But my brain has been fuzzy. No wonder.

@kaylenk
What medications are you currently on and at what dosages? I hear you about being over medicated and with the wrong medications to help with symptoms.

It is so important for all of us to educate ourselves on symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, and medications. We need to advocate for ourselves and ask lots of questions. Many times people get put on medication but often there isn’t a full review of all medications to determine if there are adverse reactions causing side effects. If medications are filled at different pharmacies, drug utilization reviews are not really done. I’m sure pharmaceutical companies wants doctors to keep prescribing and not stopping medications. The incentives may keep some doctors doing this. It is easier for doctors to prescribe medications than do testing to get to root cause of symptoms.

Good Morning !!! I thank each and everyone of you for all your comments, hugs, and liked. No matter where you live, Spring is on it's way; and that certainly helps. I live in New Jersey and have not seen a winter like this one. Yup, can clearly remember lots of snow, sledding, being bundled up with so many clothes one could barely walk, and lots of laughter and fun. However, this cold weather really hurts this body which has Leiden Factor V, and I am having a tough time regulating my Warfarin dose. Yes, my primary wants me to go on Eliquis or Xarelto, but this middle class senior cannot afford to, therefore until a generic is made available, which I might be able to afford...warfarin and taking my INR weekly is not a choice, it is a way to survive.
Again, I send each of you not good, but great wishes for a wonderful day. Your, comments and hugs, have brought tears to my morning eyes. Thank you.

I feel obligated to mention this re Warfarin. I had been on warfarin since 2005 for a "error" in diagnosis but now no one has the appetite to discontinue it. With that said, in 11/13/2023 I had a successful lung procedure done out of State. Returned home, Pulmo said lets just change your warfarin to Eliquis...long story short I was morbidly dizzy (3-5) times per day, horrible Vertigo and basically unable to function. Researched it myself.......again long/short Eliquis can cause dizziness......lost 8 months of my life a we figured out why. I finally did my own research and found supporting documentation. Stopped taking it on 8/8/24, told the Pulmo....haven't been dizzy since. You must be pro-active in your care!!!!!

Thañkyou VERY much for sharing your experience with me. I do appreciate your time; most of all, at the moment, regulating my INR is close to insane. That is why my doctor and I are looking for an alternative to Warfarin.
I do hope this finds you well and on the path to a positive recovery.
Thañkyou again,

I told them I did not like the side effects that were making me feel sicker.
The Dr. sent a letter to me to find another Dr. To that was not morally right. I did nothing wrong.

Your doctor feels as though he can no longer help you at this point. He’s doing the right thing by having you move on and has done nothing wrong. Good luck.

The medications that they give you make you feel sicker. I want nothing to do with those Drs. They can go to hell and sell the Pharma poison to someone else.

I agree but taking action that results in self sabotage despite big pharmas greed is not helpful. That said intolerable side effects need to addressed with a doctor and if you were told to just move on to someone else I do not see that your concerns were adequately addressed.
