Ugh my hair

Posted by Denise @denisestlouie, Dec 17, 2024

I feel like puking. I'm reading an article from Medical News Today on hair regrowth following chemotherapy. It's so discouraging. It's talks about slow growth, thinner growth, hair that even after the cancer growth is thinner than before and may not ever look or feel like it did before. I'm so glad I didn't see this article before I lost my hair

My bio hair is stick straight and very fine but full and I wear it blonde. I had plenty of fine hair that I was pretty good at working with. I mostly liked my hair.

I wore my hair permed though the 80s into the 90s. Sometimes really short other times shoulder length. I call that the poodle years.

My hair grows slow and has never been much longer than my shoulders. I consider myself a "short hair dog." I always envy the beautiful long "Farrah" like hair my cousin had, but I could style mine like Olivia Newton John. In 1996 I made a really hard decision to cut my hair short similar to Princesses Diana's. It was a hard decision because I knew it could be years to be shoulder length again. Over the last decade I wore it shoulder length.

I was sick about loosing my hair. I wanted to use cold capping while receiving chemotherapy. The care manager sent me a message that I felt was cold and uncaring when I requested the order for cold capping. She said the doctor will sign it but you be wasting your money it never works. I went to PubMed and I found an article discussing Carboplatin and TAXOL combo and cold capping. All patients stopped cold capping after the second cycle because it didn't stop the alopecia. So I decided to embrace wigs.

I'm in a hair loss sister community on Facebook. Most the women have hair loss do to hormonal disorders and autoimmune alopecia, but some women's hair didn't fully return after chemotherapy.

I've been really doing a great job taking care of my body through chemotherapy. Hopefully my hair will return better than before. I can only hope right?

The peach fuzz was really uneven. Some hair follicles woke up before others. Since I was planning to ditch the wig ASAP, I wanted it to look as even as possible right when it grew in.

I wasn't thinking that it would make the hair grow faster.

Thanks that makes since

I start carbo/Taxol and immunotherapy on March 10th and have stocked up on scarves. Got one wig but have no idea how to wear it. I thought I would be able to just put it on. Lol. I think I need some sort of band or cap or adhesive to hold it in place though once I get to that point. I am also sick thinking about my hair loss. My hair has been such a big part of my identity so it will definitely be an adjustment. My hair is also greying so when it grows back, if it does, I bet it will be all white! What a change I'm in for. Trying to stay positive but it's hard sometimes and I occasionally break down. Thank you, Denise, for posting and letting us know we are not alone.

Google how to wear wig. How to care for wigs. You can purchase wig bands and wig caps off Amazon. I used a site called head covers to get products. You can also have a hair dresser we ho is comfortable with wigs cut it to suite you.

It sounds like you are mostly planning on wearing scarves and caps. They are more comfortable.

Paula Young is an online wig shop with wigs of all price. I just got one for $70. It's really nice.

My hair is coming back my last treatment was 12/9. My eyelashes and eyebrows are grown in. I shaved my legs this week first time is 6 months. My head hair is full but still so short. Too short for me

I know this sound dump, but have fun with you head covers. I love caring for my wigs. I wear them all day everyday.

I wore these bamboo hats from Etsy throughout my hair loss.

They are super soft & warm. And eventually, after the initial trauma of loosing your hair, that’s all I needed or wanted.

I’m two years+ out from the hair loss. The first year, it grew quite slowly. It is now starting to grow a little faster & is not quite as thin. And the chemo curls are gone.

I have found the most painful aspect to be events - we’ve had two family weddings in the last year & a half. Just figuring out how to style it (I always wore it long) & all the photos afterwards. Sigh.

But I’m cancer free, & that’s what really matters.

I’ve lost my hair three times due to taxol. The first time was devastating! The other times were better, because I knew what was coming. Each time my hair has grown back as thick as it was before. It returned curly each time, and with a little more salt than pepper! The white hair always grows back first, then the darker hair follows. I have used the same wig during my 15 year journey with cancer, and have a good selection of caps and scarves ready for the next time. The drugs that I have used for the last few years only thin my hair, but it doesn’t completely fall out. I have not had to shave my legs at all for about 5 years! My eyebrows and eyelashes are hardly there either, which is quite disappointing, but that’s the way it is, and can’t be helped.
I tell people that the only time I cry these days is when my hairdresser cuts the curls off, I have very straight hair! I also had long hair before I lost it the first time. It’s been shorter than shoulder length ever since.

I have very straight hair. I wore it should length before. But most my like it's been short and for 20 of those years (70s and 80s) it was permed.

I form eyebrows tattoos. I wore them for about 2 months. The eyebrows and eyelashes were the last to go and first to come back. I also had eyelash, but as of today I'm done with them my eyelashes are long enough for mascara.

I'm still wearing wigs. I'm interested in what color my hair is. I've colored it's since I was 14. I never see more than regrow (roots) it's kind of a fawn color now like you would see in dogs LOL

Hi all, just want to add my experience with chemo and hair. I did chemo in the fall of 2018. Believe or not, I miss the days when I lost my hair or was bald 👩‍🦲.
I could shower and do my make up in 20 minutes, no bad hair days!! I bought the most colorful and fun bandanas for $1 at Hobby Lobby. I had lost my straight naturally blonde hair and my eyelashes and eyebrows, but I made it through chemo and 35 radiation treatments (with peach fuzz) and that was the most important thing. My hair grew back extremely curly and grey but it did grow back. Almost six years and many haircuts later, I still have the curls, the texture has changed, but I’m still here 5 years cancer free. To make a long story short, you are NOT your hair, you’re very strong women going through a journey. Have fun with wigs, hats, scarves or nothing at all but don’t forget to celebrate the strong women you are. All the best 🙂
