How to get mental health treatment without mental health insurance cov

Posted by hales001 @hales001, 22 hours ago

I have been dealing with mental health issues for nearly 6 years now. I have just had to find a practitioner who would treat my mental health with meds based on my symptoms. But I have ZERO mental health coverage on my insurance. I’m a SAHM and we do not have the additional funding that’s needed to pay out of pocket for a therapist, or psychiatrist, or whatever it is that I truly need. Now I feel my meds are starting to cause me bigger issues and worsen my depression. How do I get proper help???

In the US? How is this possible?

Welcome to Mayo Connect,
I am assuming you are in US. I would contact your insurance company again and verify your coverage. There has been laws passed that require insurance companies to cover mental health the same way physical diseases are covered. Sometimes the challenge is finding an available provider that takes your specific insurance. If you insurance does cover, the insurance company should be able to provide list of providers in your area that accepts your insurance.

If you find out you are not covered, check if your state has resources. In MN it is under Dept of Human Services, your sate may call it something different.

Another resource for finding help / coverage would be government's National Institute for Mental Health: https://www.nimh.nih.gov/

Am I correct SAHM stands for Stay at Home Mom? Or is it something else.
