Ambien stopped working
Hi everyone. I’m hoping to get some advice as I feel a little lost and the doctors I’ve spoken to so far haven’t been able to come up with a solution to my problem.
I’ve had insomnia and also wake up a lot for year. It started with noisy neighbours and construction work (before then I had no issues). During this time I also developed chronic pain that made it even harder to sleep.
My dr prescribed “light” sleep medications to begin with. Some didn’t work, some gave side effects, and some did work for some time. But since I had no control over the noise in the area, eventually I had to move on to Ambien (and gigantic ear plugs).
So, I was on Ambien for a few months, started at 5mg but then noticed I had to take 10mg as my body was getting used to them. Eventually I moved and got rid of the noisy neighbours, but my body was so used to my crazy sleeping habits that I couldn’t go back to my regular hours. I would still wake up the hours my neighbours used to wake me up.
I tried my very best to stay at 10mg of Ambien but eventually I found myself waking up every second hour or so, having to take more to fall back to sleep. I got scared and called my dr, who gave me diazepam (5mg) and told me it should help me break this vicious cycle.
It did. The very first night I slept all night and only needed one Ambien. It stayed like this for a few months and my plan was to taper off everything, but then bad things happened in my life and it didn’t feel like a good time. I was too afraid to not get any sleep while going through so many struggles.
And now I’m kinda back to where I started. My body is so used to Ambien that sometimes I can’t even fall asleep on 10mg (even tho I’m still on diazepam as well). If I do fall asleep, I wake up after 4 hours, sometimes after only 1-2 hours, and it’s impossible to go back to sleep (my chronic pain isn’t helping).
Since I’m already on Diazepam I can’t use this to control the issue this time. My dr told me to try 7,5mg Diazepam and even 10mg but for some reason it’s not working. Quite the opposite. So I’m staying on 5mg.
What can I do? Has anyone been in a similar situation? I really want to get off both Diazepam and Ambien, but at the momemt my goal is to just find a safe way to sleep through the night because I haven’t slept in months!
Could I maybe slowly taper off Diazepam and add something else so that 10mg Ambien will be enough to sleep through the night?
Sorry this got so long. I’d be so grateful for any ideas or advice.

Please let me respond regarding going off sleep meds for an extended time. When I was last in a hospital I wasn’t given my sleep meds, three nights of no sleep, I had a heart attack. So please be very careful.
You have my sympathy. I have severe insomnia. Was on different doses of Ambien for 15 years until they stopped working. Was switched to Lunesta for last 2 years . I was then able to get 6 hours each night which was fine. Lately the lunesta is only giving me 4 to 5 hours. Any help would be appreciated
I also take 10 mg in pieces throughout the night..I wake every couple of hours. I also take Quetapine 100mg benadryl 50mg usually twice in the night, tizanidine 4mg twice during night, and 600mg of gabapentin
And here I am after being up for.an hour at 2am wide awake. I dont even think a horse tranquilizer would make me sleep. It has caused so many complications in my life when it's really hard to make a daily routine because my nights have no sleep routine creating fatigue and brain fog.
Any advice?
My Zolpidem, after about 10 years, gives me only 5 hrs/night. I added one non-prescription PURE Zzz Quil Triple action chewable to my nightly Zolpidem. It only gives me, on average, 1 hour extra of sleep, but I'll take it. The Triple Action has Melatonin and Ashwagandha in it. With my combination they put me to sleep in less than 5 minutes. Good REM too, even if only 5-6 hours. I suggest you read about Ashwagandha before taking it. They do confirm it can help sleep and anxiety. I hope this helps somebody.
Me too. I make up a cocktail of pills and i hope I wake up in the AM. It's kinda ok if i don't wake up bc i'll be asleep forever. I've been on Trazodone 50 mg- 100 mg, ambien 5 mg, lunesta 3 mg, temazepam 15 mg or 30 mg. There's one with a Q but it's too expensive (workman comp. ) I've asked for 2 years for a sleep study and no one orders it. I also take Xanax for sleep anxiety and do sleep hygine, no tv, no screens before bed time. Supplemnet wise : Magnesium -different types, Gorilla Dream, Melatonin 3 mg at dinner time. I've started drinking to hope something kicks in. I can be awake for 3 days straight or 5 days. I don't drive bc I don't trust myself or my slowed reactions. I've fallen three times bc im too tired to lift up my feet, not bc im sedated. I have intractable insomnia after a TBI
I don’t think I have any answers but after reading all these posts, I have questions. My doctor has me on 10 mg of Ambien nightly this started in about 2013 when my best friend died. It seemed like a great solution until about two years ago when suddenly I can’t go to sleep after taking 10 mg so my routine is to get out of bed sometime around midnight watch two or three hours of TV and then take a half a dose or 5 mg at around 3 AM And get about four hours of sleep that started as an occasional fix and overtime has become a regular thing, but I then end up running out of Ambien seven or eight days before the refill is due so at least all of this year and a little bit of last year every month I have one week where I simply do not sleep at all. I stay up all night I watch TV. I work on my taxes. I’ve even bought some Gummies and melatonin and things like that and none of that works. Does anyone have any idea how to make your improvements on what I’m doing right now?
I and I'm sure hundreds of others here would like to help, but many of us have the same problem. There's got to be some answer out there to help us. If someone finds one, you'd be worth $ millions overnight.
You should try CBT - I. There are a lot of good behavioral things to do to increase your chance of sleeping. That being said, some of it works for me like a bedtime routine, cool and dark bedroom, limiting screens before or in bed. What did not work was getting out of bed every 20 minutes if not sleeping. I’m better off lying in the dark meditating. I use Lunesta successfully, as Ambien gave me morning nausea and anxiety. Ashwatanga seems to help it work better. See a sleep specialist doctor. They will help you get consistent good sleep habits and the right medication.
scttdncnalan, you need to stop the Ambien and find something else that works for you. Seriously... like someone else said.... not getting sleep is way worse than taking something for sleep issues. There are lots of sleep medications. You just have to find one that works for you. Talk to your doctor. You need to find something that works for you. I take Lorazepam (1.5mg) with Amitriptyline (30mg). Good luck. Don't give up! It's important to your health to find something that works!
Unisom with active ingredient Doxylamine works great.
