After researching some of these treatments and reading posts about side effects i did decide to go with HRT and suppliments. Two out of three different doctors tried to discourage HRT even after pointing out scientific evidence. When consulting with insurance rep she revealed that insurance does accept HRT as a viable treatment for osteoporisis. The Dr of Rheumatalogy said it was not a viable option! Wondering why the controversy. Insurance rep candidly insinuated it was about the money. Oh how i cringe at that thought. Maybe it is controversial. Maybe works for some but not all. Maybe about the money. My levels of PFAS are very high. These are chemicals in our water from processing carpet, living near army bases that use fire fighting foam. To add a mixture of Prolia or any other chemical is not for me. We already have so many toxins in our environment for me the more natural way seems best. This is a new journey for me. Wishing you the best.
So many stories and all helpful! I am going to ask endocrinologist about the HRT patch that has been specifically designed for post menopausal women with osteoporosis. Your helpful remarks appreciated.
I am 70 years old and have over last 15 years been on Fossamax , actonel and now Evista., with breaks in between
I also have osteoarthritis - Interested to know what type of HRT you are all referring to and impact it has had .
Not commonly used in Australia for osteoporosis
Mine started with .025 estadiol patch aling with 50 mg of progesterin. After 3 months the OBGYN upped dose to .050 with same progesterin. Also a script for physical therapy for exercises that address osteoporosis and encoragement to begin Calcium suppliments. Will know more with next dexa scan.
We all are using slightly different HRT. I am using compounded estradiol and testosterone and 100 promethium. I use transdermal. I feel so much better. Hormones facilitate muscle and bone growth. I am on Tymlos for two years. I had one reclast infusion and will have 2 more ( maybe it is 3, I forget) annually and then I am done for life I was told. I am 68 currently. I will stay on the BHRT as long as all tests look good. All of these things come with some risks and my family history of cancer and heart disease require periodic observation. I hope that helps.
@loriesco, you say you are on Tymlos but are having Reclast infusions. Are you on Tymlos and Reclast simultaneously? I have never heard of this. Also, could you comment on being "done for life" after you get your last Reclast infusion. Has your doc said how you will hang onto any gains if you stop drugs? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.
@bayhorse I had one Reclast infusion. Then was started on the Tymlos. You don't do them both at the same time. (there was a 9 month space in my case. However, they do different things. When I am finished I will go back for 2 or 3 annual infusions. It keeps on working for 2 to 3 years says here. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/reclast-infusion-for-osteoporosis#duration
The Tymlos does the job of building bone density then I guess the thinking must go something like - the medicines build your density and slow the breakdown. And if it builds the density, then it will take a long time for it to break down enough to need the medicines again. My bones are not all bad. Just some. So I guess we see how it goes. But that is what the doctor said. I don't think we should overthink the future too much -- make sure you have trustworthy doctors and read the literature. Keep bugging them and have them answer your questions. My doctor doesn't like to talk about it too much. He's stressed out. But I do make sure I get enough info at the right times to continue. I'm happy for right now.
thank you for your reply .
look forward to hearing your progress .
I agree the exercise is important. I have been doing regular weight training with an exercise physiologist and am also doing the Onero program with a physiotherapist and a Pilates program with a different physio and walk at least 6km each day up and day hills - on average spending at least 1 hour every day on exercise plus my own home exercises.
As I also have osteoarthritis I need to keep moving
@didamco, is your physiotherapist Onero-certified? I had hoped to find a weight coach here in Austin who was at least familiar with the program, but so far, no go.
Yes they are - there are 4 Onero certified physiotherapists or physiologists in Sydney Australia not many for a large Sydney. As Onero originated in US I would have thought the program was well established there.
