Experiences with Phoenix campus Village / Help in Healing Home
Curious to hear stories on applying to stay at the Help in Healing Home or "The Village" that's on-campus with Mayo. Did a referral help you get in? How long was the waitlist?
My husband's surgeon suggested it to us today as we will have to be in town for 3+ weeks, depending on how surgery and recovery go. I submitted an inquiry, but curious if we should go ahead and ask for an official referral from his care team.
His surgery hasn't been scheduled yet, there is some flexibility there since his last test results were very positive, but his surgeon would like it ASAP (and definitely within the next 8-12 weeks). Wondering if anyone know how far in advance you typically have to call this place?
Thanks.

Three years ago, I stayed at Help In Healing Homes https://helpinhealinghome.org/ for 30 days. It was a positive experience. The rooms were quiet, and the central kitchen was adequate. Depending on your expectations, the downside is that items like TVs or sound devices (other than headphones) are not permitted. The good news is its much lower cost than a motel; a person can walk to the main Mayo building. I hope this helps. Allen S
@delphiniums When I had my Heart Transplant my wife checked into this place but in January 2018 it had a waiting list. So I would advise checking into it as soon as you know when you will need it. We ended up in a hotel as it was not availible at that time.
@colleenyoung thank you for this reminder!! I meant to share my experience.
@delphiniums Hi! I had a spinal fusion surgery on December 11, 2024 at the Phoenix Mayo Clinic Hospital. I live in California so I knew I would need a place to stay before and possibly after surgery and also a place for my caregiver while I was in the hospital.
I first contacted the Help in Healing Home (H&HH) by filling out the online inquiry, but I would recommend calling them instead. They are so friendly and helpful and will answer all your questions. The lady I talked to immediately emailed me the paperwork that I needed to fill out to get on the waiting list. I believe I called them about a month before my surgery.
You do not need a referral from your doctor. They charge $50 per day and a one time cleaning charge of $50. They require you to have your own vehicle or a rental.
I had so many questions about how the common areas work and other things that I wasn’t able to find online and she answered all of them. 😊
The main concern I had with them is that they aren’t able to confirm an available room for you until about 7 to 10 days before you need it. This is because they never make anyone leave until they are ready.
I knew I needed a backup plan, so I made reservations at the Sleep Inn, with the 48 hour cancellation policy in case H&HH didn’t have a room available.
About a week before my surgery, H&HH called me and said they had a room available. I had recently decided to keep my reservation at the Sleep Inn so I “released” my reservation at the H&HH.
I hope this helps!

We stayed at Help in Healing Home for ~120 days in 2023 while my husband had a stem cell transplant. I cannot recommend it enough. The people who work and volunteer there are compassionate and eager to help. There’s a small park/picnic area adjacent and some beautifully maintained trails nearby. The buildings and grounds are beautiful, with plenty of community spaces as well as places to find solitude (and watch beautiful sunrises and sunsets) if you want it. It was so convenient for me to be able to walk to the hospital while he was there, and, as he got stronger for him to walk to and from his appointments as well. We made friends there who we still keep in very close contact with! All in all, it made a very difficult time in our life much easier. I don’t think they will let you make a reservation until you have something scheduled, but I think you can still get on a waitlist. Definitely get your care team to call for you. You might not get a definite answer from them until a day or so before you need to be there. They are adding a new building in 2025. I’m happy to answer any other questions you might have!
Thank you! I was curious how far in advance they tell you; I understand they can't give a ton of notice. Did you book for a hotel just in case you didn't get the call from them?
His surgeon put in a note yesterday and said his team will put in a request for us.
Thank you, Sherry! That information is truly so helpful. I will call them on Monday to get on the list rather than waiting for the referral to go through.
As far as them requiring you to have a rental care/vehicle, I will have to ask about that! I am licensed but don't like driving in strange cities, and my husband won't be allowed to drive due to his heart surgery. We always take an Uber wherever we need while in Phoenix.
@delphiniums Yes, it was actually the vehicle that was a dealbreaker for me.
The lady at the help and healing home said that they would confirm that I had either a a personal or rental vehicle when I checked in.
I was concerned about returning a rental at the airport and the length of time it would take and the extra steps that my caregiver would have to deal with so we used Uber from the hospital to the airport and it was very easy.
Wishing you the best!!
