Prednisone and Wegovy (or other weight loss medication)
Has anyone taken prednisone along with a weight loss medication like Wegovy? Before I started my autoimmune disease journey in October, my doctor prescribed Wegovy. I couldn’t find it anywhere at the time. After I started prednisone, I was concerned about adding any other new medicines. Plus, I read that prednisone may interfere with blood glucose control and reduce the effectiveness of weight loss medication. Now that it’s February and I’m still on prednisone and still struggling with my weight, I want to revisit taking Wegovy. Anyone have success with Wegovy (or another weight loss medication) while on prednisone?

Thank you for sharing your experience and congratulations on the weight loss. Any reason for switching to Zepbound?
Thank you for sharing. It’s good you stick with your yoga.
Thank you for sharing your husband’s experience. As much as I would love to lose weight, I’d be okay with not gaining more. My regular doctor who initially prescribed the Wegovy before I stated prednisone is on maternity leave and no other doctor wants to commit to saying it’s okay to go on it now.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Were you on prednisone while taking the Ozempic or Mounjaro?
Thought it might help to add that I’m currently on 20mg prednisone. Whenever I try to go below 20mg, headaches come back. Next step may be adding Actemra to help taper down on prednisone. Another reason I hesitate to add another medication (Wegovy) to the list. I’d feel better knowing other people have with no problem, but I feel like there isn’t a lot of info on it, at least none I can find.
Both! I’m on a prednisone taper.
I don't want to sound shallow, but I am concerned that Prednisone is making my weight loss on Wegovy so slow. I'm 77, received a diagnosis of PMR not long after my 2nd Covid booster, and started Prednisone 15mg. It worked beautifully, and I slowly taped to 7mg over about a year. I started Wegovy in July 2024, and have lost about 40 pounds. I need to lose 50 more, but weight loss is so, so slow (I had even gained 3 lbs at my last doctor visit). I am eating in a calorie deficit, cut out out alcohol and sugar over a year ago, and I ride my stationary bike almost everyday. I have also been walking some, though not as much as I should. My doctor said the only factor in the slow weight loss might be the Prednisone. I embarked on a taper that was 6 mg for two weeks, 5 mg for two weeks, and recently ended up at 2.5. The pain came roaring back so I increased to 3 mg (no relief), 4 mg (no relief), and now 5mg as of today. I will see if I can stay on 5. Has anyone managed weight loss on a glp-1 while taking a low dose of Prednisone? I have been on Prednisone since 2022 so perhaps I must do a much slower taper.
Hi
I don't know about using the two products together but I do know Wagovy is the same as Ozempic and both myself and my daughter-in-law have tried it and found we were both sick. After each injection, we felt limp, lightheaded and sick to our stomachs for 3-5 days afterwards. Couldn't eat, couldn't go out anywhere and just felt rotten. I persisted for 7 months but just couldn't keep feeling sick so much of the time, so I quit. There is also a Class Action Suit with over 20,000 people suing Ozempic. My daughter-in-law also quit.
As far as Prednozone goes, I couldn't get my aunt off of it fast enough. That stuff is horrible.
I think it might be helpful for you to check for a second opinion with your medications.
Both of the meds have way too many side effects, The most trusted people trained in medications and their side effects and interactions are pharmacists!
Google is alright but I'm finding I get a lot of info from library books on the subject too.
I had a bad reaction to Covid booster Dec. 21 and have been on Prednisone ever since and have gained a lot of weight. I can’t get below 5mg as my cortisol level is too low. I think I’m heading for Addison as my adrenal glands won’t wake up.
Very frustrating as I would also like to lose weight.
I gained a lot of weight as I’ve bounced from my maintenance dose of 8 mg of medrol (a stronger version of prednisone) to 36 mg to control a flare and gained close to 80 lbs over the years as I’ve become more immobile. I’m not a candidate for the GLP1’s as my mom had thyroid cancer, and I’ve had bouts of pancreatitis. Last year I met with a weight management specialist who started me on topiramate, a seizure medicine, to curb appetite. There are other combos such as phentermine/metformin that can be used as well (I have tremors and phentermine is a stimulant so that’s out for me). Phentermine curbs appetite and metformin deals with the insulin-resistance. He mentioned he’d had a few patients with severe autoimmune disease go “whole food plant based” and they’d lost a good amount of weight and felt better as their inflammatory markers were lower. I committed to it for a year and lost 42 lbs. While I have lost weight, my inflammatory markers have been resistant, unfortunately. I have since added back eggs and cottage cheese to relieve the monotony of beans and greens lol and am still losing. My husband’s PCP put him on Wegovy to lose some weight, and he has Sarcoidosis. She said she wanted to start him on Wegovy as there are two doses so he can go up if need be, and then if he becomes resistant to the Wegovy, then she still has the option to switch him to either Mounjaro/Zepbound which are stronger if I understood correctly. His pulmonary doctor said research shows the Wegovy may have some anti-inflammatory effects as well. Best of luck 🙂
