Latanaprost

Posted by mabbs24 @mabbs24, Jul 10, 2023

I was recently diagnosed with Glaucoma and have been using Latanoprost. I have been having side effects such as chills and fatigue that I read can be caused by the preservative. I called my doctor to ask if I can try the non-preservative drops. He wants me to completely stop the drops I've been using for a week and see if the side effects subside. I am really shocked because I believe it's a risk to even miss one dose! Has anyone ever heard that before?

I was prescribed Latanoprost recently due to eye pressures of 21 and 18. The drug makes me feel light headed and my legs feel a bit shakes. I also had an increase of nasal drainage and a dull headache between the eyes. I don't feel normal until 15 or 16 hours, after I take the drops. Does this ever go away

I have been using Latanoprost; one drop in each eye nightly for at least twenty years with no issues at all.

Your symptoms might be caused by the preservatives in Latanoprost. You might ask your doctor if you could try one that's preservative free.

My 81 year old husband is on latanoprost for several years. I don't like putting it in his eyes every night. I keep it refrigerated. He is on two other drops that I can't spell. One starts Brom and the other starts with a D

Latanaprost does not need refrigerated after it has been opened. To the Mabbs24, the original poster, please lower your anxiety level. Your doc knows what she or he is doing. Going cold Turkey off the eye drops is not going to cause you any damage to your eyes. I am curious what med s/he will prescribe for you ad a substitute.

taarbaradh, You're telling the wrong person to lower her anxiety level. My post was about
preservatives. Be nice.

Your post also mentioned that you were worried because your physician told you to stop taking the Lantaprost drops. Please reread. I am very nice—always.

I was on latanoprost for 17 years. Prescribed by fellowship trained glaucoma expert who also diagnosed my glaucoma. My new ophthalmologist in Tennessee also fellowship trained took me “cold turkey” off the drops with zero side effects for me. Her opinion is I was over diagnosed as many glaucoma pts are. She followed up with 6 week and 6 month appts. I am being released to a general ophthalmologist now.
I asked my original doc what happens if I miss an evening drop. “Nothing. Just take the drops again tomorrow night.” In 17 years I probably forgot only 12 times. BTW I never had any side effects from drops.

I’ve been back on latanaprost for two weeks now and I have debilitating fatigue and brain fog to the point of inertia. I’ve been on it and off it three times over the past year and each time I get this incredible fatigue so I come off it to see if it will go away and it does and then I go back on it to see if maybe it’s different and I can tolerate it and here I am on it two weeks again and it’s it’s just it’s really hard to function.

If I miss my scheduled time for taking my drop, what should I do? This from Glaucoma Research Foundation

Taking your eye drops consistently (compliance) reduces the likelihood of pressure fluctuation (diurnal variation). Inconsistent use of drops will vary the intraocular pressure (IOP) and has been scientifically proven to be detrimental to your glaucoma. Therefore, when you miss a morning dose of your medicine, take it later in the day when you remember. If you forget your evening dose, use it in the morning when you remember. Continue your regular dosing thereafter, even if it seems like you are doubling up within a few

Cyndia110,
I was put on latanoprost a couple of weeks, ago in the left eye only due to a pressure of 21. I constantly had a headache between my eyes and fatigue which lasted to 1 to 2 pm. I was told to stop taking it
since I developed migraines. I typically get them 2x a year and don't know if they were triggered by this drug. I have been drug sensitive in the past, but was not offered a preservative free eye drop. I was told to come back in 6 months for a pressure check and would get referred to an ophthalmologist.
