Inconsiderate, intimidating neighbors cause depression and anxiety?

Posted by robertwills @robertwills, Oct 26, 2024

Lets; say you have neighbors that sit outside your apartment building, smoke "weed" in public view (which is illegal) and use intimidating gestures towards you as you come and go. Could this be enough to cause legitimate depression and anxiety?

I have been in my own nightmares in life. The only way I woke up was to take action. I got therapy took legal action set boundaries moved. I had to get an order of protection as well.

How volatile? Is your safety at risk? I have never been on why the authorities are not intervening. Do these individuals live in your complex?

Very volatile. They have displayed anger again and could "act out" at anytime now. One of the men's history is very troubling. These are people who live in my building and because they are tenants have rights. The police can arrest them for violations of the law but they can not permanently remove them, unless it's the worst violations of law. So there is a process underway and as I indicated previously they will in fact leave soon, voluntarily or not.

There is action underway but as you know it almost always takes time. We lie (SIC - I originally meant live) in a civil society in the US and everyone has rights, even people violating your rights have rights! Some laws need to change.

As far as therapy I actually thought about this earlier. What this has done to me is something I never imagined and I never heard of. I am starting to get "the shakes" again. I never had this before experiencing what I have for months now. I got over my fear of groups of men in general recently but now it's come back. I can't even believing I'm saying this.

Thanks again for listening.

Update: The men may now be harassing me "behind my back" but it's too early to tell. If this behavior continues on I will know for sure. I spoke to the landlord today about this and they said that if I feel threatened to call the police. I am now at the point where I will the next time. They also said the men will in fact be gone at any time now but couldn't give details. That was a relief to hear again.

Apparently where I live harassment is actually a serious crime. It appears that it can be any speech or behavior that serves no purpose other than to intimidate, cause fear or emotional distress. I never knew this. I never had to. I'll update when anything noteworthy happens.

Robert,
I wouldn't wait to call the police. Your situation sounds like it's getting worse. Perhaps you should take a day and go meet with your Chief of Police or Sheriff in person, whichever applies. That might get a better response and a safer one. Also that way the police will certainly be aware of how bad the situation is. It seems to me like your landlord has been saying too many times that they will be gone any time. Also keep praying and God will protect you and your nice neighborhood. I'll keep praying for you also. Have faith. God will answer our prayers!

PML: I thought about going to the police, telling them everything I have experienced here along with my safety concerns. I still might do that, if only to get some more information on the people involved, an opinion on how bad the situation actually is and what I should do to keep safe. The police have been here before and they know these men. As I indicated before, the men may be under surveillance.

The landlord has not told me much but I found out in the last weeks that they know more then they have told me, including things that are serious. That's understandable due to privacy and legal reasons and hopefully they have put a security detail in place that I am not aware of. The men may very well damage the property, too. The landlord is on top of this, for sure. It's the legal process that often takes time.

If the men continue to actually harass me, and I will know in the coming days, I will schedule an immediate meeting with the police.

Thank you again for your prayers. I certainly feel better right now then I did earlier. Tomorrow is another day. I will update again if anything else comes up.

Thank you for your concern. The last two days have been ok here. No harassment. It seems like it's the quiet before the storm though. It's really difficult to predict how this will end but I 'm trying to do my best to control what I can. I'm being very careful. It's getting lighter noticeably later, which is really good. Not that it matters at all to these people.

I had a bit of sick stomach yesterday and earlier today over this. I also got angry a little while ago just thinking about how this has negatively impacted my life. When this is over I think I will be fine.

Thank you again. It is comforting to know that you have concern for me. I will update again soon.

Update: The men are still here. Almost everyday has been some kind issue here. This just keeps going on and on and on and my life revolves around the situation. I realized recently that it could be that all or most of these men are not just "guests" but people who moved in when the legal residents moved in. There may be ten people living in one apartment! What concerns me though is who are all these people? As I indicated previously one has a very troubled past.

What this has also done is make me suspicious of everyone I do not know in the building! I used to always say "Hello" to everyone without reservation but now I have to focus on what they look like and how they act before I say hello and I'm sure my face reflects the tension, and disgust, I am feeling. It's made me look like I'm not that friendly of a neighbor that I actually am, or was, unfortunately. This situation has made me paranoid in the place that I live!

Thanks for listening. I will update again when something happens.

Robertwills! Move! This has been going on a long time and you need to come to terms with it. It will not get better and it is making you ill at ease, paranoiac, ....this is no way to live. At some point with all due respect you have become part of the problem and not the solution.!
