Endometrial Biopsy: I’m terrified, what can I expect?

Posted by suesam @suesam, Dec 21, 2024

Hi there, I have no bleeding but my endometrial thickness is a 6 and I have an endometrial biopsy scheduled in 30 days and I'm terrified. I made the mistake of reading all the horror stories on the internet. My doctor said it is painful and is preparing me by asking me to take VagiFem 10 for the next month and also to take advil before arriving. I've had pap smears all my life and they never hurt but my last one did. But I think that's because the doctor ( mine retired ) used a large instrument which hurt but then switched to a smaller one which was fine. It's a different doctor who will do the biopsy. I've had 2 transvaginal ultrasounds which didn't hurt and one hysterscopy which didn't hurt at all. But I'm terrified of the biopsy. My ultrasound showed a thickness of 6, nothing else, and my CT scan showed nothing. I wish my doctor hadn't told me it would hurt - when I said my last pap smear hurt, he said this would hurt more. He wasn't trying to be mean, just preparing me. I'm hoping I can do it. Any thoughts? And thanks for listening.

I am thinking of you today and wishing you kind and competent providers every step of the way, a smooth procedure with minimal discomfort and results that bring you relief and/or hope and at least clarity.
You’ve done so well in preparing, seeking reliable information and support. I will look forward to hearing how you are doing afterward as you are up to sharing.

Hi everyone,

My doctor couldn't complete the biopsy. Sigh. Apparently my cervix or something was too small to be able to pass the utensil through. So the next step is a gynecologist.

He was great though. He specializes in women's issues and has done a lot of these biopsies and he was trying to spare me the wait time to see a gynecologist. I was in no pain at all. He used freezing and the pap smear took seconds and was the easiest one I've ever had. I was raring to go - lol - and at one point he made me laugh so hard I thought I'd fall off the table. But I've never had children, I'm not sexually active, and I have atrophy and my paper skin even started bleeding a lot. My damn lady parts just wouldn't co-operate. LOL.

I was in good spirits though and felt well-prepared. But darn.

Thanks for listening though. I appreciate. it. 🙂

@suesam Oh, my. I’m sorry to hear that the procedure could not be completed. I do hope you get an appointment very soon with a gynecologist.

Don’t you just love a doctor who understands your fear and anxiety and tries to make the procedure as comfortable as possible? While it’s a huge disappointment that the biopsy could not be performed I am relieved to know that you were and are in good spirits.

Hey Naturegirl,

I had a woman doctor - who I adored - for over 30 years. She retired a year early so she could leave us in the hands of my current doctor - she felt if she waited another year, she'd lose him to another practice. He specializes in women's issues and took all sorts of extra courses etc. I was really touched how calm and gentle and sweet he was yesterday. He even said if I was in too much pain and needed a break to just say 'Stop' and he would stop immediately. So it was a disappointment that he was not able to complete the biopsy. The wait times to see a gynecologist are long - so I'm a bit nervous of the wait. But I was relieved that it was a good experience yesterday. 🙂

I’ll be getting mine done on Feb.24th and am so nervous! I’m 45, have had a Mirena IUD in for 3 years. My periods have started being irregular for the past 6 months or so (lasting 8-9 days) and this past month, it lasted for two weeks! My gyn will be freezing my cervix first, so I am really hoping that takes some of the pain away

Sorry to hear the procedure couldn’t be done 🙁
How did you find the freezing? Was it painful?

Hi Lucky,
Wishing you all the best on the 24th. I was in no pain whatsoever. My doctor asked me to take advil before coming, so I took 2 advils an hour before arriving. He was doing my pap smear first, so I asked him to use the smallest tools possible and wow, I never felt a thing and he hadn't done any freezing yet. I didn't even realize he'd completed the pap smear. Then he did the freezing part - I didn't ask how he did it - but once again, I felt no pain at all. I was super scared going there, but once there, I began to feel relaxed and my doctor was encouraging me to take deep breaths and relax. But then he couldn't finish it due to my cervix not co-operating so I never got the rest of it done. But up until that, I was in no pain at all and was even able to relax - and it was all so fast. Super fast. Oh, I wish you all the best on the 24th.

Thanks for the insight! My gyn told me to take 2 Advils before as well. He will be doing a pap, removing mg Mirena, and then the biopsy. I really hope it’s nothing serious 🙁

Hi,
I will be undergoing an endometrial biopsy next Monday. I am so nervous about the procedure and of course the results! My ob/gyn did say that he would freeze my cervix with an injection that should help some. He also suggested pain killers. Wondering what everyone else took? And how long it took for biopsy results to come back?
Thanks!
