Nights sweats and Shingrix vaccine

Posted by mjq @mjq, May 21, 2021

I had the shingles vaccine on May 4. That night I experienced a terrible night sweat. Ever since that night I sweat every night excessively. At least one or two nights a week I must get up and change my night clothes completely. I am on immune suppressant drugs. Has anyone else experienced this?

I’m 64 and I regret second dose of shingrix vaccine. I have been experiencing hot flashes daily on average of 10 per day and disrupts my sleep making me sweat profusely causing me to change my soaked pjs. I went thru menopause 15 years ago and it was brutal. Why is this happening ? I think maker of this vaccine is hiding something! How do I stop these hot flashes? Will be seeing my doctor in a week to discuss. Ladies beware !

It isn't just females. I had the second Shingrix vaccination in January of 2022 and have had night sweats ever since.

I got my 1st shingles vaccine on Friday. Felt a bit sore at the injection site but that's it. The next day light flu-like symptoms. 3rd day same thing .... then night sweats, soaking wet pillow and sheets. Felt better by the 4th day, but night sweats again.
This is the 5th night. Let's hope this doesn't continue.

I hate to tell you this, but I've had night sweats ever since I got the second singles vaccination in January of 2022.

I discovered this Mayo Connect conversation as a result of a google search. I have been active in the Mayo Clinic Connect Polymyalgia Rheumatica chat room and a couple of others. I have had drenching night sweats since the Spring of 2019 when I had an adverse reaction to the second Shringrix vaccination. I am still dealing with those and other associated problems. I was diagnosed with PMR, polymyalgia rheumatica, an autoimmune problem that is diagnosed when you have certain symptoms and you test negative for other autoimmune known diseases. I have long believed that I do not have PMR. I finally agreed to about 6 months of prednisone treatments, many PMR patients can be on prednisone for 15 months to years. Something I simply would not embrace.

Back to 2019, I started having drenching night sweats and still struggle with them, they are better now than in 2019. I also had pericardial effusion - this caused tachycardia problems (resting heart rate between 100-110, at one time it was up to 135) that I still monitor. Next problem - idiopathic neuropathy in my feet, no treatment. I am being treated by a Sports Medicine doctor for Greater Trochanter Pain Syndrome, aka chronic trochanter bursitis. I have sudden onset Urinary Incontinence that I literally have not seen a doctor for because it is low priority. I manage it by frequent bathroom visits. I also have idiopathic anemia that keeps my hemoglobin dipping down then coming back up - I have had a colonoscopy, an upper GI and I swallowed a pill camera all looking for internal bleeding, no luck. Fatigue is the main side effect of anemia, plus high blood ferritin. I have also had a bone marrow biopsy - all normal, however I had to see several hematologist to get the final agreed decision that I did not have a rare form of blood cancer. IBS-D that seems to have a cycle from normal to diarrhea that has some correlation to the night sweats. I have had lymphatic massages for several years in an effort to manage the edema in my feet and legs. We also investigated a searing pain in my thighs and legs, undiagnosed as to cause, we looked. I have a few other minor symptoms post Shringrix that I simply ignore because I have enough on my plate as is.

I needed a hysterectomy for benign tumors and meniscus surgery on my right knee. Following the hysterectomy my night sweats suddenly stopped. They returned following a Tetanus booster I had 20 months later. Since that vaccination I have had an RSV, Covid and Flu shots in Fall 2024 - all seemed to bump the night sweats up some.

I am almost 81 and have been dealing with this for 6 years. It can be exhausting. I have met some of the nicest doctors. Most have not been able to help me but they encourage me to continue looking for answers, a few lean in and help me look. I have learned to be a strong self-advocate and ask hard questions as well as some obvious common-sense questions. During all this time I have had to stay on top of the normal health screenings to make sure something does not sneak up on me.

Now for my questions to the people who have posted to this discussion - based on my list of the problems mentioned above, I am wondering how many of these are shared by others. Please add your unique symptoms as well. If you wish you can respond with a private message to me. I am doing my own, totally non-scientific data collection to see if we can see patterns. I am a math major and had a 50+ year career in Data Management and working in data analytics, so I am very data driven. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

My night sweats also started a week or two after receiving the second Shingrex vaccination. The only other symptom I may have in common with you is anemia that comes and goes. I also had a colonoscopy, upper GI track scope and the pill camera (14 days to pass).

If you believe you have had an adverse reaction to a vaccination, you can self-report it to a government website - please use this link if you are interested in reporting your case -
https://vaers.hhs.gov/
My Infectious Disease doctor also reported my case to a professional data base, so you might speak to your doctor if you are interested in having them report your case as well. I do not have details on this professional site - sorry.

Can I ask which autoimmune you suffer from? I have autoimmune hepatitis & 6 others but that one affects my liver and when it’s out of whack I don’t process proteins n sweat like a pig n have terrible night sweats. Possibly check into the liver?
