More mucus changed color

Posted by lilianna @lilianna, Feb 5 7:15pm

I could barely produce any mucus except clear stuff during sodium chloride nebulizing. Recently I started using the pari red nebulizing cup and later doing autogenic drainage with hips up, chest lower. I started having a lot of clear to yellow green mucus. I have to do 4-5 sessions of AD to stop the flow. Is it common to suddenly, with the change of clearing technique, produce so much more and from deeper lungs or it means infection. My January mucus sample test showed aspergillus fumigatus. I also am often short of breath with tight chest. My pulmonologist reordered just fungal sputum test- which takes a month to come back and a CT ( had 3 last year) What are your thoughts?

My thoughts;
I have experienced that very thing of producing more sputum due to trying different methods of airway clearance. Sometimes it's good to change up the way we do our airway clearance. That stuff can "hide" and hang out in places that needs the "different" encouragement to come out.

What is the Pari Red neb cup for?

I’ve experienced an improvement when you change up the airway clearance technique, but also when there has been an infection. You typically get other symptoms when there is a new infection but maybe that depends on the organism.

According to their Web site, it produce smaller particles, which are supposed to penetrate better.

There are three different PRi nebulizing cups:
Pari sprint- blue plastic
Pari plus- clear plastic
Pari star - red plastic cup( I started using this because I found out that it produces the smallest med particles that are inhaled to the deepest of your lungs)

@lilianna My RT reminds me that everyday mucus amounts color & consistency can be different. It's good that you're submitting another culture to confirm diagnosis. A couple of years ago I had a culture that grew aspergillosis. I worked hard on airway clearance, repeated the culture and it was negative. As I remember I had a bunch of blood work to rule out APBA.

thank you scoop, the repeated culture showed aspergillus species, did not show a specific one. My pulmonologist ordered a CT and then we will see. I do the airway clearance religiously, my throat is sore and I hope it will again go away. Aspergillus did not show for 5 months and came back again. Thank you again for sober thoughts.

I googled : What is ABPA in medical terms. This came up. "ABPA stands for Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis. It is a lung condition caused by an allergic reaction to the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. Introduction. Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a fungal infection of the lung due to a hypersensitivity reaction to antigens of Aspergillus fumigatus after colonization into the airways.
