Collagen for osteoporosis?

Posted by cpb @cpb, Jul 26, 2021

My friend's medical doctor has her take collagen for her bones. I decided to try it and wondered if anyone knows more than I do about this.

Hi @loplady, no I was not taking any meds. I had 1 prolia shot almost 2 yrs ago and had an allergic reaction, so I never took any of them again, and never will. My #'s are still not great, but I'm encouraged that changes to my diet, exercise, and overall lifestyle has made even a modest improvement. I wish you well!

Wow, really impressed in your spine increase, I hope I can achieve that without meds as well. Good luck!

I contacted Dr. McCormick 4/10/2023 about his collagen product with Fortibone looking for documentation about Fortibone being FDA approved as he was advertising. He suggested I contact Gelita the manufacturer of Fortibone. I did via their website but they never responded. I asked Dr. McCormick again, stating that he was stating it in selling his collagen supplement so I would think he could provide me with this information to share with my endocrinologist. His response was "The FDA does not approve nutritional supplements. Rather, companies comply with FDA guidelines during their manufacturing process." My response was "Hmm.. you specifically state "Regarding the safety of OsteoCollagen-Pep: Fortibone is FDA approved." This is what I have passed on to my endocrinologist. No wonder she didn't believe me.
You should take that statement out as now you are saying differently and people, like me, believed that it was FDA approved because I read it on your website. Very misleading...."
He then responded:

Corrected...my sincerest apologies.

And he did, his OsteoCollagen-Pep no longer states that as of 4/25/2023. I buy my Collagen with Fortibone from Sparkle Wellness, it is called Osteo Boost. I have not been consistent taking this but my Dexa score did not change in the 17 months I worked harder at diet, exercise and this product on and off. I am now trying to take it daily.

Another thing to take into consideration. Fortibone was compared to a placebo; not to another hydrolyzed collagen peptide in the small study showing effectiveness. Any other collagen peptide may have the same small benefit. The definition of "significant" is open to interpretation. I recall when I looked at the study that saying significant was a real stretch.

"IS FORTIBONE® CLINICALLY PROVEN TO PROMOTE BONE HEALTH?
Yes, a clinical study involving 180 women with reduced bone mass showed the potential of FORTIBONE®. The participants took 5g of FORTIBONE® or a placebo daily for 12 months. The study measured changes in bone mineral density (BMD) using DXA scans, and the results indicated a significant improvement in BMD after FORTIBONE® supplementation."

I read the Fortibone studies and, from what I got from it, they didn’t compare it to any other collagen. It was Fortibone or nothing. It makes me skeptical. Does anyone see any unbiased studies comparing collagens?
