Should I reschedule blood work that's 10 minutes prior to MRI?
Just going over our appointments for later this month and see they've added bloodwork at 8:50am. We've had an MRI scheduled that same day at 9:00 — and it was a 3 month wait list. Same check-in desk for both appointments.
At first, I figured it didn't matter. But then I remembered when we were sitting in Mayo last summer (we're out of state) waiting for bloodwork and they were backed up. A lady was getting antsy behind us saying they had already missed one appointment waiting on blood draw and they were going to be late to another. Eek!
Should I call to reschedule this bloodwork? Presumably, they saw his 9am appointment when they put the bloodwork in so I don't want to step on toes, but I'd hate to miss the MRI we've been waiting so long to get...

Good morning, @delphiniums. That is a tight schedule between labs and the MRI. Phew! I know we’re able to go 30 minutes ahead of time for labs but that’s still no guarantee early in the morning, when the lab is backed up, that you’ll make it in time for your MRI.
So I’d definitely call scheduling to have that blood work appt either much earlier, or after the MRI.
The only potential hiccup to scheduling after the MRI would be if you have a doctor’s appt immediately after. The lab results might not all be up for review yet.
Anyway, your instincts are spot on, so give scheduling a call. They’re very accommodating. Wishing you only good news! ☺️

Agree with @loribmt , I would ask to have blood scheduled earlier. After might not be option if MRI is contrast where you have an IV and dye.
Based on previous comments, is your appointment in AZ? I am more familiar with Rochester and know MRI and lab check-ins are usually not at same desk.
I would call the MRI desk and ask their advice. They may have some insight on the blood work and be able to help. If not try the prescribing doctor's nurse. I've been in the large waiting area in the Hilton building waiting on blood work, too. Then making the mad dash upstairs to an appointment.
I know before I have a CT or MRI they check my creatine level. Maybe they are doing that??
They check creatinine to make sure that you kidneys can flush any contrast agent easily.
The lady I spoke with said there's no way we'd make the MRI in time and best to move the bloodwork, but they didn't have any early appointments. So his bloodwork is now for that afternoon. They need his labs for his cath the next day, not the MRI.
However, I am wondering if the contrast they use will affect his numbers? 🤷♀️ His cath is 5:45 am the next morning so we don't really have any other options. He will be getting bloodwork locally a few days before we fly out so hopefully the cath lab will have the info they need one way or another.
@delphiniums
Depending on the type of blood work they are doing, there is no way of knowing if contrast will have an effect. Will you have results of bloodwork done locally be available and do you know if running same test? Maybe you should call back and ask about contrast affecting blood test ordered for cath and what blood tests they have ordered?
What time are you arriving day before your appointments, any way you can get blood work done day before?
Scheduling can be hassle. Do not want blood test interfering with the cath.
I dont know why, I don’t think you would…you should check with your provider.
I hope everything goes well and smoothly for you.
We won't be in until late Sunday night, and his MRI is first thing Monday morning and the cath is first thing Tuesday morning. I did check and they were planning to run a CBC. He had both a CBC and Comprehensive Metabolic completed locally today and we'll be bringing those reports with us.
Last time he had a cath, they ran a stat kidney and lipid panel just moments before to check his values, but that was a local hospital not Mayo.
I was surprised Mayo didn't schedule for any blood work other than the CBC; I'm assuming they'll be doing the additional tests in the cath lab Tuesday morning like the other hospital lab did.
