Should I reschedule blood work that's 10 minutes prior to MRI?

Posted by delphiniums @delphiniums, Feb 3 12:49am

Just going over our appointments for later this month and see they've added bloodwork at 8:50am. We've had an MRI scheduled that same day at 9:00 — and it was a 3 month wait list. Same check-in desk for both appointments.

At first, I figured it didn't matter. But then I remembered when we were sitting in Mayo last summer (we're out of state) waiting for bloodwork and they were backed up. A lady was getting antsy behind us saying they had already missed one appointment waiting on blood draw and they were going to be late to another. Eek!

Should I call to reschedule this bloodwork? Presumably, they saw his 9am appointment when they put the bloodwork in so I don't want to step on toes, but I'd hate to miss the MRI we've been waiting so long to get...

They usually don't trust you home lab and will re-run stuff using their labs and equipment. You didn't say in your OP that they will be using contrast with the MRI.

I am unsure if trust is the issue, the most up to date data is desired when diagnosing and just before surgery. There may be other tests that have not been performed on your home lab samples. Replication/verification of data results plays a huge role in accepting both scientific findings and your personal state of health, too.

You could have a blood test at home the day before you go up there and they would still re-do it. You can take CD copies of a 3 day old MRI, but they would still do another. But as long a insurance covers both it doesn't matter. There must be BILLIONS spent on duplicate services. It likely would be the same whether I was referred to Mayo or the Cleveland Clinic.

I appreciate hearing your point-of-view. My husband's experience has been different so far. He was out-of-network with Mayo when we first went last year and they told us it didn't matter where we got the requested diagnostics as long as they were done. His Mayo doc even wrote external referrals to help us get the requested tests done at in-network hospitals.

Mayo is asking my husband to repeat the heart cath he had done, but they've explained why — the local doctor didn't take enough images or certain standard measurements, and they don't feel comfortable endorsing a treatment plan with the limited info it gave them. And we know this isn't Mayo being picky as even the surgeon at our local hospital where the cath was done told us the images didn't fully show the blockages in his LAD... and she was expected to operate on it! Yikes.

On the flip side, Mayo *has* been satisfied with the MRI he had done locally last year and they've accepted CT scans, lung tests, etc. done locally over the past eight months with no request to repeat them.

It does make me wonder how Medicare and insurers feel about the duplication, though. Mayo must have some stellar medical billers and coders to get all the diagnostics and procedures they order approved, especially if they're repeating something another doc has done recently.

I'd have to go back and read what was done when I was referred almost 4 years ago. IIRC they did have their radiologist read the MRIs and other things that were submitted with the referral. Not sure if my insurance was billed for that or what re-imaging was done.
