Jak2 positive, biopsy next: Does it mean I have blood cancer?
Hi, I've been told I'm jak2 positive. I'm due to have a bone marrow biopsy in a day or two. My question is, if it comes back normal does it still mean I have some kind of blood cancer?

Hi, I'm 68. Just diagnosed with Jak2. They did a DNA blood test. My platelets are fine.
Good question. Jak2 might be the first sign that you might have MPN. Curious why did they do test for Jak2, did you have some other symptoms? I only had extensive blood testing and bone marrow biopsy AFTER my platelets kept going up, year after year.
my bone marrow biopsy results are consistent with a JAK2+ myeloproliferative neoplasms. Do i have cancer?
Well, MPNs are indeed blood cancers, and the JAK2-driver is associated with one of the MPNs, ET.
But only your oncologist can diagnose your individual situation.
MPNs are "chronic" cancers, not acute cancers like lung or breast cancer. They are rare and most people (even a lot of doctors) have never heard of them. Fortunately, effective and inexpensive treatments are available.
MPNs should be taken seriously, but many on this forum have been living with this diagnosis for decades.

Yes sorry 🙁
My mom was jak2 positive - high hemoglobin and high hemacrit.
The biopsy will tell the docs if there is anything more/worse.
My mom’s biopsy came back indicating low risk of anything else. But she still has Polycythemia Vera. Manageable with phlebotomy and medication. All the best and good luck to you. Think positive and have a strong moral support group.
Hi,
I was checked for JAK2 by a rheumatologist looking to see if I had rheumatoid arthritis. I have no JAK2 mutation and do not have rheumatoid arthritis but do have one enlarged right finger proximal interphanageal joint huge enlargement with no pain and an enlarged right sternoclavicular joint also with no pain. My high platelets were found on routine blood work 12/11/24 but have decreased by 411 doing nothing differently and no meds. These rare blood cancer diagnoses are very confusing, but at least good as slow progression if we have them.
I understand how the word "cancer" can strike fear in your heart. When I first heard, I was "frozen" for about a month, when a good friend "kicked me in the butt" and told me to go to MemorialSloanKettering, a mega cancer center. I realized I'd rather take meds for the ET Jak2 than to possibly have a stroke or heart attack. Yes, it's a chronic blood cancer, but could be MUCH MUCH worse. All the best, take care, stay safe
@sbaker343, did you have a chance to discuss the biopsy results with your doctor yet? What are next steps for you?
About 6 months ago a blood test showed very high platelet counts. Next, I tested positive for JAK2 V617F mutation. For a couple of months, I have been taking Hydroxyurea (500 mg) My parameters are basically within limits, but my Dr wants to get the Hematocrit under 45% - last tested at 46.3%. He boosted my Hydroxyurea to 24 x 500mg/week. I get more blood tests next week and will have a tele meeting with my Dr Feb 20. Hoping to reduce medication, while having no negative reactions. I will review the biopsy results in more detail at that meeting.
Best wishes I have the same diagnosis as you as of August 2024 sending you good vibes.
