For mild/moderate COPD, does Mullein tea/tincture help clear lungs?

Posted by minnie528 @minnie528, Sep 5, 2024

Background-RLower lobectomy 8 months ago Stage 1A NCLC w/mild to moderate COPD/Emphazima (not being treated for). I guess I'm still having post surgery effects from lobectomy as far as right rib discomfort, chest tightness, but experiencing some shortness of breath depending on what I'm doing, so I guess I attribute that to the surgery, but also the COPD. I was a smoker for decades, & I still smoke 4-6 a day after no success with patches. Has anyone used Mullein to loosen mucus & to clear lungs, help with breathing etc? You can use it as a tea or a tincture. I want to try it, but am wondering for COPD, have you tried it? I want it to be safe, but effective

No I don’t. I rinse my organic lemons, depit them, slice them into small slices including rind, and put in my food processor. Remove. Then take organic (if I can fine it) ginger rinse and slice into small pieces, pit into processor, remove. Same for small pieces of pineapple. Mix lemon, ginger and pineapple. Mix 1 tbl lemon 1/8 tsp ginger, 2tbl pineapple (bromelein) and freeze in ice cube tray. Melt one cube daily and add to water twice a day. I’ll also add a drop of organic oil of oregano at times. Awaiting my organic oil of mullein. For now I take two organic tabs of organic oil of oregano 4000 mg each.

There is other anecdotal info about mucus and breathing using herbs etc.

Thanks, that is a good thing to know. Have you ever tried it?

Yes, it’s very strong stuff and stings the nose if you put more than 2 drops in! I don’t think it gave any immediate relief so have now tried a diffuser for a couple of hours at night time.

I tried a few oregano drops in my diffuser for a couple of hours in bedroom before sleep. In morning I woke and could take a deeper breath in.

Please, (and I know how difficulkt it is to do,) quit smoking.

I was doing a pack and a half of Camels a day plus pipe smoking (and inhaling the pipe tobacco) in the evening when I quit.

What I found is this: the addictive property (aside from habitual properties of addiction) of smoking is nicotine. We all know that, right?

Peeling the onion further: Nicotine's component (that some bodies require more of and therefore crave) is nicotinic acid, or niacin, or vitamin B3.

When I don't get enough of it, I get nervous, edgy, slightly panicy, find it difficult to settle down and focus, react poorly to stress.

At those times in my past (and just because) I'd reach for a cigarette.

One deep breath in, hold it for a second, blow it out and I'd feel better. Is this you?

When I discovered a book "Mega Nutrients and Your Nerves," (now out of print) I learned the above correlation between my tobacco addiction and what my body was deficient in.

Try this: Get some 100 mg. niacin tabs (they're cheap.) Get the straight niacin, not the one labeled flush-free niacin.

On day one, take one.

Do this when you can have time/space available to lay down for a while if you need to. Side effects are flushing of the skin, which can be mildly uncomfortable, and mild nausea. Lay down until it passes. You probably won't feel any side effects at all for the first couple of days. At mild levels they're tolerable; I even look forward to that flush that makes me feel alive. At a certain point, though, your body says "enough." You'll know when.

Day two, two 100 mg. niacins. Day three, four, etc. until you're definitely feeling the side effect limits set in. That might be 400 or more mg per day. For me it was around 600 when I started.

But for the rest of the day, all of a sudden when I reached that level my mental acuity sharpened, my stress reactions, calm and focus returned - and I didn't have the physical need to reach for a cigarette. At that point the self-discipline had to be there for me not to reach for one anyway - but if you know, in your mind and heart that you don't need one, you can break the habit.

That level becomes your daily dose, so to speak. I reach mine these days by combining stratght niacin (easily assimilable) and flush-free niacin to reach that level, in addition to what's there in my daily multivitamin.

When you start this path, please throw your last pack of cigs away. You don't want to have them around.

Pray.

The journey to better nervous health without tobacco is less than a week away.

You can do this.

Addendum to above, for clarification: My multivitamin gives me 50 mg. niacin/day. One or two straight 100 mg. niacin tabs, taken at different times of the day, brings total to 250 mg./day.
A 250 mg. flush free niacin (AKA niacinamide,) which I take mid-day with other suppliments brings me to 500 mg. total per day. I can move that total up or down depending on stress levels, digestive issues, etc. but mentally, if I don't get at least 300 mg./ day it ain't gonna be a good day.

My lung issues are still there from smoking, and my COPD is not all smoking-related. I won't go into it here. But I'll say this: Today I'm much better mentally with niacin, and if I hadn't quit smoking I'd be dead.

#1 recommendation Stop the 4-6 cigarettes per day. Have you tried the nicorette gum as a cessation aid?
Have not heard of Mullein tea for loosening secretions but don't think it would be harmful. Additionally, increasing fluid intake helps as well

I smoked for almost 40 years. It took about 3 times to quit using patches. Off-brand patches did not work for me - only Nicoderm patches worked. I even found them at a great price on eBay. The last I bought were all 21mg patches. After using the 21mg for the first 6 to 8 weeks, I cut them in half for the next 4 or 6 weeks and then in thirds to finish. Each step has a specified number of weeks. I quit 9.5 years ago and don't even think of them anymore.

Hi @denise96, I moved your question about mullein tea to this existing discussion:

I did this so you can read previous helpful post and connect with members talking about COPD.

@colleenyoung I am just now trying Mullein Tea Extract. It seems to help loosen the mucus, so you can cough it up out of your chest. It's worth a try. I'll keep you posted if I remember. Ha!

I also have heard about using mullien for lung relief. It seems to be fairly safe. I am a member of consumer lab online and read their article on it. They also it is fairly safe, but as always you should talk to your doctor. Also read that drinking pineapple juice helps with mucous also. It has bromlein in it and I guess that is what helps. Researched mullien on amazon and read many reviews. Some people swore by it working and some not so much. For now, I will stick to the pineapple juice. 4 oz in am and 4 oz in pm. If nothing else, it should help with constipation. Drinking green tea helps also. Liptons green tea is their top pick.

@denise96 I am just now trying Mullien leaf extract. It seems to be loosening up the mucus that is stuck in there.
