Tips on minimizing withdrawal symptoms from Effexor (aka Venlafaxine)
I have been taking Effexor/Venlafaxine for years and tried to get off it a few times but each time I try to give up the chemical withdrawal symptoms are a horror story and I give up giving up. Anyone got any tips or tried and tested strategies? Thank you

@gailb You seem to be in favor of limiting your intake of pharmaceuticals, although you have decided to continue citalopram forever. Given your objectives, I would encourage you to investigate the chemistry of citalopram. I won't geek out too much on the chemistry here, but in short, I will say that citalopram is 50% (S)-(+)-citalopram, aka escitalopram, aka lexapro, and 50% (R)-(−)-citalopram, which (in my humble opinion) does little more than give your liver more work to do. In other words, you could potentially take your current dose of citalopram, cut it in half and replace that with escitalopram (aka lexapro) and receive the same pharmacotherapeutic benefit. Actually (in my opinion), you could potentially go even lower than 50% because (R)-(-)-citalopram has actually been found to counteract the effects of (S)-(+)-citalopram.

Talk to your doctor and/or pharmacist for more information if this interests you.
Cheers!
@ou90n93 I can’t believe a Dr put you on Effexor to quit smoking. I hope you found a different one
@nanke99 how did you find a Dr experienced with Effexor withdrawal?
Hi, @ou90n93 -- that is an interesting journey from being put on venlafaxine to help quit smoking, then ending up vaping and using strawberry hemp extract.
You mentioned that you should have just continued to smoke. Are you talking about your experience with the vaping, hemp extract, venlafaxine, or a couple of those?
Hi, @tundra -- in case you've not seen them, just wanted to point you to a couple other discussions on Connect specifically about benzodiazepines (benzos) where you might be interested in checking out the posts and perhaps participating:

Are you in the process of weaning off venlafaxine (Effexor), @bekah2017?

I am just wondering if anyone has had success from getting off Venlafaxine ER- I was prescribed this to help with hot flashes 5 - 6 months ago. It worked great and then one weekend I forgot to bring my pills with me out of town and it made me so sick. I decided I would rather have hot flashes than to take something that makes me so sick. This has been such a terrible experience. I slowly lowered the dose and 2 days ago stopped taking it completely. I seriously am so ill. Any suggestions of how to ease the symptoms?
Sound like your having really bad withdrawals! Don’t stop until you talk with your doctor
