Thumping in ear with certain noises

Posted by cranberry4 @cranberry4, Jan 5 8:39pm

This thing has started happening to me recently where certain sounds, usually loud or low frequency ones, will trigger this thumping sound/sensation in my right ear. It isn't in time with my heartbeat but with the sound that triggers it. Like if it's a voice, it's in time with the syllables or rhythm of speech. It usually happens in bursts of two or three thumps that aren't evenly paced.

It's starting to happen more frequently/in response to more noises. When it first started it would happen every once in a while but now it's happening regularly every day. Sometimes it happens seemingly by itself with no noise as the trigger.

I would really appreciate it if anyone has any idea what could be causing it or if anyone else has experienced the same thing.

cranberry4, Bless you. Do you have any hearing loss or just this aggravating thumping sound?

There is Pulsatile Tinnitus that can cause a thumping pulsating sound. Most people have ringing in their ears with Tinnitus. I have it in both ears. Ringing in one and like a Morse Code clicking in the other. It worsened over the years and my hearing was suffering greatly.

I got hearing aids over a year again and the Tinnitus is 90% better when wearing them. They are an adjustment.

Blessings & Prayers to you & Happy New Year. I pray you find answers.

Hi. I think what you are describing is tinnitus. There is all kinds of information out there if you access Tinnitus Talk or the American Tinnitus Association websites. Don’t fall for any supposed cures, they are just a waste of money as far as I can tell. Hearing Aids are very helpful especially if they have Bluetooth so that you can relax with music or nature sounds using the APP provided by the hearing aid of your choice. I have Widex hearing aids and like them. Insignia is supposed to be a little more tech advanced or Oticon according to my audiologist. Do get tested for your hearing as most tinnitus is associated with some hearing loss even if you don’t notice it yet.

I've had this on and off for yrs, syllable thumping like Morse code. I take generic Sudafed (pseudoephedrine HCl) behind pharmacy counter. This usually helps get rid of it for a while, till my inflammation gets bad again.

syllablethumper, I have what sounds like Morse Code in my left ear that would come and go
and then I had hearing loss with it. The right ear had high pitched ringing Tinnitus already with significant hearing loss.

I got hearing aids 1.5 years ago and it has helped with the high pitched ringing and the Morse
Code significantly. I would say, it is at least 90% better and my hearing is so much better.

Hearing aids are an adjustment, but they improve your life significantly.

I have the Oticon brand that fits behind the ear. I did not get these at Costco but I have
heard great things about Costco.

Prayers & Blessings....

Thanks for sharing, there's some comfort to know we're not alone. And the suggested help.
I have GPA, & tinnitus too. Sometimes soft, & other times very loud.
I have other worrying issues too, if anyone can shed some light please...
Both before & after treatment, I could have minor hearing loss, to extreme. Sometimes it starts like there's a vault(safe)door slamming shut! I'm affected by frequencies, a certain type of mobile phones at times, & the amount of people around me in a confine space.
I also can have difficulties to unpop my ears. Unbelievably my hearing test was fine. But I said it's not realistic. In the real world I'm not in a noise free room, & waiting to hear a noise.
Also before treatment, & now after; I've had this dirty army-green / waterbase " Discharge " coming out of my ears. Since treatment, there's also been shades of orange with red centre OR brown with black centre waxy discharge. Now deep in one ear is sore, & the other is knumb.
Has anyone else experienced this, & what does it mean.
After initial thorough treatment, all issues cleared up, & it felt soooo good to be back to normal.
☆Thinking of you all ♡
I've used headphones or ear pods to act as a barrier, & it helps too

Hey i have recently noticed the same thing. Mine love thumping to music but only when i cover my left ear. If i lay on my left side i am treated to a bass drum to whatever i listen to. It is not to my heart beat at all. Odd thing is if i cover my right ear it stops. I punctured my right eardrum a year ago. I was wondering if that has anything to do with it. I know the ears are connected.

I guess case descriptions vary as ice crystals.
I’ve lived with Tinnitus for years; that high pitched trill. It’s constant for me.
Lately this drumming in my left ear has begun, sometimes in rhythm with my heart beat but more often not. It can be as rapid as 90 pm. It can begin very slowly and build or begin with rapid beating and slow or just drop off.
This began weeks ago and has become more frequent and annoying.
An MRI run for another issue showed a minor brain bleed from the past but other wise no abnormalities.
I do have a minor heart valve issue on the diastolic side but again no other issues.

As a 17 year American Tinnitus Association Support Group Leader living with four loud noises I can tell you cause is sometimes not the answer because it is never found. The answer is habituation. Learning to live with acceptance. As Mayo clinic helps people so do I teach people how to habituate. I have never taken 10 cents for myself in 17 years and have worked with hundreds of people helping them gain life quality.
