Sugestion for good walking shoes for a 90-plus-year-old?

Posted by ciddy1931 @ciddy1931, Dec 26, 2024

Am reluctant to walk as much as I probably should. Am 93 and in good general health but quite fearful of possiblly falling. I feel that if I had a pair of sturdy walking shoes I would be inclined to walk much more. Any suggstions?

I went to the shoe store today and found an extremely helpful clerk. I decided on Mizuno Wave something. I tried it out this afternoon, and after some initial pain, I engaged my core and continued my walk. I think these will be okay. I must have tried out a dozen different shoes/brands! The clerk was incredibly patient and helpful. The store was packed!

Mizuno is a fantastic brand. You hit the jackpot! Their shoes are high quality, well engineered, are very durable, look great and most of their running shoes can be used for walking. I wore Mizuno shoes for many years but their midsoles got too soft, as is the overall trend in the industry. Even so Mizuno midsoles are some of the most firm today. I hope they go back to the totally firm (but highly shock absorbent) shoes they used to make with the real hard plastic waves in the midsole (not like the cheap soft plastic in some models today). The firm, sturdy shoes were heaven upon each foot strike. You chose well!

I may try these as I did not have good luck with the ever popular Hokas.

Thanks.

New Balance running shoes for the last 27 years -- since age 55. Walking shoes never gave me enough support or cushioning, and didn't fit as well . Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

I am 77. For improving balance and stamina I do " rebounding" = very gentle bouncing on a personal trampoline where feet remain in contact with the trampoline. A handle can be installed for maintaing balance/ safety. Very safe and handy plus great for The Rocky Mts. weather.
For walking indoors and out I wear "barefoot" shoes which are very comfortable and easy to put on/ off.
I puchased the above items from Temu. They have a huge selection of the shoes and very good return policy.
The trampoline was only $50.

FYI:
Temu is based in (Communist) China, our enemy during the Cold War and continuing. They do have seductive bargains but by googling the item, you may be able to find it—possibly at a s/w higher price.

I like New Balance, too, however for a recent trip to Italy (a lot of walking!) I bought a pair of black, slip-on Skechers which was the only shoe I took with me. They went with anything. Comfortable from the moment I put them on. I don’t recall the price but I’m thinking it was around $75.

I like SAS shoes. I've worn them since having to walk on Concrete floors. They provide good support and I get the leather, so they last for years. I tried switching to mesh running shoes, but either the top developers holes, or the soles are so soft, they wear out in less than 6 months.

Some SAS models have removable footbeds.

What is a good walking shoe if you need a wide footbed but a regular heel?
