Almond Milk and GI symptoms from additive carrageenan
I thought I was doing something healthy by substituting Almond Milk instars of dairy milk. I am a 7 heart bypass survivor and a senior.
I am writing this to warn people about my experience.
I felt just terrible and didn't know why, until my wife researched what I had been consuming lately. It turns out that Almond Milk was the culprit.
I had nausea, severe stomach pain, bloating and gas all at once.
After 1 to 2 days it disappeared. I had the worst sleep of my life.
I just wanted to pass this along.
You think you are doing something good for yourself and Yikes, that was a mistake.

Be careful and google Gellan gum, too in case Silk has it. It can cause problems with people as well. Usually guar gum and Locust bean gum are ok for most folks.
I drink Almond Breeze I looked at what’s in it. There isn’t any carrageenan in it doesn’t bother my stomach and has more calcium then milk. I don’t tolerate cow milk but everyone is different so have to take everything into consideration for your body. Good luck
I used to drink 2% milk and changed to Low Fat many years ago . I then switched to 30 calorie ( no 35 cal ) Almond Silk -- Never felt better . I am now nearing 85 years young .

1 ReactionI drink the Silk Chocolate Protein Almond Milk which does contain Gellam Gum, but it doesn't irritate my stomach like Carrageenan, which is horrible for our digestive tracts. It's a thickener made from red seaweed.
I too have a really bad gastrointestinal reaction to carrageenan! But I thought the Ingredient list did not include that so now I’m worried because when I drink the chocolate protein, almond milk I’m again having problems with my stomach and diarrhea. It’s awful to have intolerances to foods ! I can barely eat normally bc of having so many and thee is no medication that works and trying to grocery shop for tolerant food’s leaves me frustrated.
Get the brand MALK when you buy almond milk. It is pure almond milk with nothing added. Remember to shake it. It is delicious.

1 ReactionWestsoy, soybeans and water only. Trader Joe’s ( if one is near you) has soy and oat milk also made only with soy or oatmeal. I’ll check on MALK. I’ve not hear of it.
We also have an Almond Cow, and often make our own almond milk. Very easy to do.
I had the exact problem, and traced it to a sensitivity to almonds in large quantity. I can eat a handful, but not almond milk or the Dutch treat almond letters. Got the same symptoms as you, and I don’t think it was the additives.
My wife has a tick borne food allergy called "alpha gal" which makes her allergic to eating all things mammal including dairy. Carrageenan is molecularly similar enough to the alpha gal carbohydrate to cause an immune reaction so we stay away from it. Carrageenan can cause digestive issues along with allergic responses. Manufacturers use it because it’s cheap and if 10% of people have issues with it, 90% do not so profit is, as always, the Great Motivator.
