Almond Milk and GI symptoms from additive carrageenan

Posted by mikeynorth @mikeynorth, Apr 18, 2022

I thought I was doing something healthy by substituting Almond Milk instars of dairy milk. I am a 7 heart bypass survivor and a senior.
I am writing this to warn people about my experience.
I felt just terrible and didn't know why, until my wife researched what I had been consuming lately. It turns out that Almond Milk was the culprit.
I had nausea, severe stomach pain, bloating and gas all at once.
After 1 to 2 days it disappeared. I had the worst sleep of my life.
I just wanted to pass this along.
You think you are doing something good for yourself and Yikes, that was a mistake.

The more I dig into Carrageenan history, the more I believe it is poisonous and it is slowly killing people. People do not realize how much it is in our diet, health care products, beer, pet products… It needs to be banned.

I drink Silk almond milk exclusively and it is free from carrageenan. I was so relieved when I checked after reading your post. I love the Dark Chocolate mixed with a half and half with the Original flavor. Yum! Hope you can find the Silk brand near you.

I always read the ingredients for anything I buy and avoid carrageenan. It is in many products but easy to avoid.

Thank you - didn’t know about that ! Will check. It’s like aspirtain as a sugar sub. Poison for anyone with arthritis or aches and pains - never! Why is it still in food!

Is there someone else who has also discovered this?

I switched to almond milk 7 months ago. I love it . it's better for you, cheaper and has a longer shelf life. I buy organic unsweetened and it does not contain carrageenan. Anyone willing to try it again may want to check out another brand and check the ingredients.

They put me on goats milk as a baby and I guess they assumed I would outgrew it. As I got older, I just avoided milk and things with it in it. Or I would have something with cheese and suffer the consequences with constipation for days at a time.

I was tested and it came back severely lactose intolerant. After my test came back, I have tried to be really good. I bought the almond milk and use just enough to wet my cereal, but then it hit me this morning after trying to make myself use it thinking it was “good for me.” I CANNOT do this!

Ot is unsweetened almond milk. I feel bloated and blah. The brand rhymes with milk.

Years ago a bought a product called Almond Cow. It is not cheap, but it paid for itself in a year. We make almond milk with almonds and water, period. Takes about 3 minutes to make. It is great! Have done so with oats, also, but need to shake it before drinking because of the gelatinous quality of the oats.

If I am buying non dairy I buy Trader Joe’s soy drink, it is soy and water, or Westsoy brand soy milk, again it is soy and water. I buy the original because i don’t want any additives or sweeting in mine.

I talked to an allergist a few weeks ago. I told him my symptoms when I drink/eat Cows, Soy, Rice, and Almond milks … my stomach hurts and I feel sick. Even if lactaid and carrageenan free. I can drink/eat Oat mik with no problem. He said it is the protein that my body does not like. I have not cooked with any of them but Cow milk. If cooked it does not bother me. I am okay with most cheeses. I eat sharp cheddar mostly.

I think I am just weird 😁

I had the test for lactose intolerance about a month ago. They draw your blood once and then you drink a chalky gritty substance. 15 minutes later they draw your blood again and every 15 minutes until it’s been a total of five times.

After that, it’s a half hour twice for a total of seven blood draws. When I got down to the last two they had to move to my other arm.

When she first started, I laughed and told her I didn’t have the regular reaction that most people do with lactose, because I knew many people had diarrhea. I tend to bloat and mine use is the opposite issue. The last half hour made a total liar out of me. I just about couldn’t get out of the hospital bathroom for my final blood draw and for the next three hours, it was go go go go!

That’s when they called me and said I was severely lactose intolerant. Then I decided to look at my 23andme results I had somewhat ignored. I knew it said I was lactose intolerant, but what I didn’t pay attention to was that it did show. I received the Gene from each of my parents. Something you’re just a carrier and you have one Gene of something - I didn’t develop this later in life. It definitely was something I was born with.

But it IS quite possible I could have an issue with the protein in soy, too. I’m going to try out and see if it works. When we’ve been on vacations, I ask for oat milk for my coffee because they seem to have it.

Thank you for that!

Thank you very much! I don’t know that I would make my own at this point in my life. Probably if I was younger, I would. I will definitely look for those brands.

I appreciate this very much!
