I drink 16 Liters of beer a week and diagnosed with hepatomegaly

Hi everyone, I'm 46 years old and have been drinking at least 16 liters of beer per week (at a minimum). Less than 6 months ago, I started experiencing right lower abdominal pain (sensitive to touch), so I decided to have an abdominal scan. The result showed that I have mild hepatomegaly. My SGPT at that time was 78, and my cholesterol was borderline.

Right now, I'm very worried and would like to get some information from those who have had a similar experience. I have been trying to reduce my beer intake, but it's really difficult. I have been drinking 2 liters a day for two straight years and just started cutting back.

I guess the first question I have is: if I reduce my beer intake from 16 liters to 6 liters per week, is there a chance for my liver to recover?

That hepatomegaly sorry

@maoyang, you're wise to try and reduce your beer intake. I know it's hard. Even small steps count.

As you know, hepatomegaly means you have an enlarged liver. Rather than a disease, an enlarged liver is a sign of an underlying problem, such as liver disease, congestive heart failure or cancer.

Are you undergoing further testing to rule out underlying problems?

Hi @colleenyoung , thank you for responding.
No, I was not asked to do any other screenings, just to stop alcohol intake. I presented, I would say, detailed and comprehensive laboratory results, which the doctor reviewed and could have advised me to undergo further lab tests if anything was wrong. I also had a treadmill treadmill stress test, which turned out to be normal.
Do you think reducing my alcohol intake will lead to total liver recovery?

Hi, @maoyang. I had a liver and kidney transplant nearly 16 years ago. At the very beginning, when my doctor suspected a liver condition due to elevated liver enzymes, he said that, "Alcohol is toxic to the liver", and to avoid it. I think that you should give it a try ❤️
