Gut supplements that improve the Parkinson's experience

Posted by tonybee @tonybee, Dec 6, 2024

People with PD have an altered gut micro-biome compared to healthy people. This includes a decrease in bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and an increase in bacteria that are pro-inflammatory. The gut micro-biome is a promising target for PD treatment and diagnosis.

Recently a number of supplements have appeared on the market that claim to "restore" a healthy "gut". Has anyone experienced any positive PD results after taking one of these "cures"?

Hi, @tonybee. You've shared interesting information about the altered gut microbiome in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). It would be useful if you could provide links to further reading for those who want to read more, if you don't mind.

Members such as @raebaby @hopeful33250 @mariemarie @laurievr @gumbo may have some thoughts for you regarding the gut microbiome and Parkinson's, especially about supplements that claim to restore a healthy gut.

tonybee - Have you gotten to talk to your doctor about a gut and PD connection and what he or she thinks? If so, what did they say? Did they recommend any supplements?

Gut Microbiome certainly makes a difference and how one feels and with individual outcomes. I’ve had Parkinson’s for about four years and I’m 75. I had migraines in my thirties to 50s before I discovered The new CGRP injections. Interestingly, my migraines resolved however now I have issues with gastroparesis and they seem to have returned with a vengeance. I have a recent CGRP injection, but it has yet to start working. so I have a headache several times a week, I’m nauseated frequently. I’m having trouble eating because of the gastroparesis and I’m losing weight. There’s not much that can be done that I am aware of my gastroenterologist has no idea where to go.

I am following this conversation because I do have gut issues. I was only diagnosed with PD in June of 2024, but I have had symptoms and issues for several years. I read the NIH consortium article shared by @tonybee with interest and will continue to read any posts related to ths issue.
Thank you!
