Has anyone out there tried Histotripsy for tumors in the liver? What were the results, where was it done, and most importantly did your insurance pay for it, or did you have to come out of pocket for the procedure?

I agree that it would be great to hear from someone who had this procedure, @jiangmx24. However, it is difficult given the fact that this procedure is relatively new.

I would be very interested in hearing about your consultation after your appointment in December. Will you post again?

Just a quick update about my consultation for Histotripsy. I visited IR doctor at UChicago Medical Center, and the doctor used a portable Ultrasound device to check the positions of my tumors. The conclusion was that it is not suitable for me, since the tumors are located behind my ribs, which block the ultrasound to reach the tumors. The doctor recommended Y90 to me instead. Does anyone have a recommendation for the good hospital for Y90 procedure, or there is not much difference between hospitals? Thanks in advance!

I had mentioned it to my Dr. and he recommended for my situation a PRRT treatment. ( Lutathera). Had my first treatment a week ago..

Hello @jiangmx24,

I appreciate your update regarding the consultation for Histotripsy. It sounds like you received a new treatment option.

Your question about the best hospital for this procedure is an important one to consider. Generally, speaking multi-disciplinary medical systems like Mayo Clinic or a university medical school are good options. These types of health care institutions are generally research-oriented and have good techniques for special procedures. If you would like an appointment at Mayo Clinic here is a link with appointment information, http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63.

Here are some discussions on Mayo Clinic about the Y-90 treatment for tumors in the liver.

Hi Teresa,
Thanks for the information. Right now, Loyola University medical center at Chicago (Maywood) is working on arranging the procedure. I would prefer to having the Y90 procedure done in Mayo Clinic, but just don’t know how long it will take to get it scheduled and get it done. My hepatologist wants me to get it as early as possible, but I don’t really know how urgent it is.

@jiamgmx: I want to personally thank you for your Histrotripsy consultation update. You have helped me and many of our peers!
Y90 is a therapy I am researching as a possible solution. It is a targeted therapy but not as specific to only tumor tissue (my liver is close to portal vein), however many have zapped liver tumors successfully. I wish you all the best in your treatment decision. This is a time to think analytically and weigh the RISK vs. the Benifits. You got this! Bette

How are you feeling after your first Lutathera treatment, @vinnie694?

I feel great! The anti nausea meds they gave me during the treatment worked great, no side effects at all with the exception of being tired, but I also had my double shots of Ocreotide right after the treatment, an I get a respiratory reaction with the shots so I have to take a double dose of Benadryl before the shots! With all that said I really can’t pin the tiredness on the Lutathera treatment.. But. Do feel good.. wasn’t any more tired with the treatment, than when I get my monthly shots..

@vinnie694: Congrats on your Histrotripsy procedure! Not many side effects is wonderful to hear.
Please share your tumor control/resolution when you get results of upcoming scans!!! I am so anxious to find out. Thanks,Bette

So optimistic about this treatment modality! I have two questions. Has this treatment been successful on NETs in other areas of the body aside from the liver and are any hospitals in the Boston area making use of this treatment? I have a small intestinal NET that is encapsulated within the mesentery thereby making it inoperable and nets to the liver. I'm currently receiving lanreotide shots with good results but the goal is to maintain but if this treatment could do more....
