Which doctor is responsible for follow up after Ileostomy surgery?

My husband had an emergency Ileostomy on August 7 by an emergency physician. He never had a physician associated with this health problem. My question is, do you have a physician dedicated to monitor the health and well being of the stoma, rashes, vitamin deficiency, loss of weight, appetite, etc.? If so we need to know why type of specialty doctor this would be. Thank you.

I have had an Ileostomy for 35 plus years, and I had a Gastrologist for anything that was/has to do with G.I./internal part of the body, symptoms, vitamin, loss of weight etc.
For thing like rashes or stoma help most places have a wound care person of some sort.
I have found that theses two specialties will work together or even refer you to another specialty if needed.
Research for best Gastrologist for type of issue is you may have, like Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, Cancer Etc.
Good luck and take care

I suggest starting with your GP and go from there.

Unfortunately, he just had his wellness appointment with his GP who did not offer any advice. Maybe the doctor was not asked the correct questions. In any case, I was recently advised to start with the Ostomy Clinic who could, if not able to help, refer him to the appropriate Doctor. Will work on that next week. Thanks for your reply.

Wow - 35 years. Continued good luck to you. Thank you for your background in your ileostomy care. I'll discuss your information with my husband as we will probably pursue this next week.

Thank you again for your message. Bill just had his operation August 7th, so all of this is relatively new. Baby steps I guess. Coloplast who manufactures the appliances and products we use was very helpful. And we plan to contact the Ostomy clinic next week. Fingers crossed. Bill just continues to lose weight and has no appetite. Need to do something!!!

In my experience, the only people who have hands on information are WOC nurses who work with all ostomy issues. They have been my ONLY option. I love my GP but ostomy care is NOT her specialty and ditto for the 3 gastro dr’s who I have seen (and they were less than helpful) and my Mayo surgeon only directed me to ostomy specialists; i.e. WOC nurses. I’m only 1 year into my ileostomy and it’s been a hard lesson to learn that most dr’s know less than I do because we are a small minority of their practices’ and although they may have basic information they can not assist you with aftercare. Trust me, I learned very quickly that an ostomy nurse is the best and only choice for aftercare issues. I still see my nurses weekly and sometimes more often to help me with all issues I’ve encountered and I’ve had plenty! And it took 9 months to finally find the right equipment that works for me. SO much trial and error before I became comfortable with the product I was using. I am finally in a good place after 11 months of practice/learning what works for me. You will discover that soon when you visit a wound care/ostomy clinic. Good luck and hang in there. I lost 20lbs after my surgery last December and it’s taken me a year to gain that weight back. You will get better!!! 💕🙏

Thank you for your detailed response. I've printed it to discuss with Bill. His weight at Aug 7 was 190 lbs. Today it is under 150. He has scheduled a call to The Ostomy clinic for an appointment to discuss the many issues. The ostomy nurse already found the best appliance which is so easy to install. A Coloplast precut (my cuts were not perfect) 1 piece appliance. Thanks again and good luck with your recovery.

I pray for good care for Bill. That’s a huge weight loss so that definitely needs to be addressed. I did my own research to find an ostomy dietician and I found an excellent one that I see virtually 1 or 2 per month. She’s been my lifesaver. She also has an ileostomy and all the degrees behind her name to know what she’s doing and I love her. If you want her contact information just let me know. I highly recommend her once Bill gets settled with an ostomy nurse. Just happy you have found good supplies that are working for him! That’s a huge success this early in his journey. As I told you previously, it took me 8-9 months to finally get the right system that works for me! Bill’s ahead of that curve!! Please update us after your contact with the ostomy clinic! 🙏

I don't know where we stand today. I had to call 911 as he had stroke symptoms. A lot of EMTs came, evaluated him and then took him to St Joseph's Emergency Room. He was given medication to break up any clots. He'll be there at least over night. Needless to say that this is another setback. I absolutely need to get him to the ostomy clinic to discuss the weight loss. Sorry to download on you, but I'm so upset. Laura
