Reoccurrence of colon cancer

Posted by jww1 @jww1, Oct 17, 2016

Was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer in May of 2015, had a color resection with no post op problems.did a 6 month regime of chemo. Pet scan in october was free of cancer. In Jan of 2015 ,I completed my chemo. In June of 2016 developed pain in abdomen, new pet scanned showed 3 hot spots, 1 lymph node in groin, mass on the outside of my colon wall, and a area around my belly button. Restarted chem in August of 2016, just had a fresh pet scan done 1 week ago it shows no decrease in size of the cancer but it shows a new lump ode that is involved .

I do not understand why a reoccurring cancer is happening, I'm not handling this well and the stress on my wire and family is sky rocketing
. My doctor idem so vert capable but is lacking in communication. Feel the time is right for a second opinion.why does it seem the colon cancer reoccurs so much.

@jww1, welcome to Connect. It must be such a blow to hear that the cancer has returned. I'm tagging fellow Connect members who may have experiences to share and support to offer. They are all too familiar with disease recurrence. Please meet @retairforceman @ilene1 @overwhelmed @grammyx4

In this discussion you'll meet @sara1257 who is receiving TACE treatments for liver cancer. @bbams' husband is getting it for colorectal cancer that metastasized to the liver. I think you'll appreciate the experiences they share and they will welcome you to join the conversation there.

It sounds like you need more answers than you are getting right now. Is there perhaps a nurse specialist that you could speak with?

Hi @jww1, emotional support can really important when you're going through something as stressful as a recurrence of cancer. There was many forms of support available.

For example, the local hospital may run support groups. Your local chapter of the American Cancer Society could be a great resource too. Sometimes being around others going through cancer can help, to talk things through, get advice. Share with your doctor about how you're feeling emotionally -- they may have some suggestions too.

Please don't go this alone.

I have had a similar experience. Stage 3 diagnosis in Jan. 2015. Chemo 5-fu for 6 months. Scan followed showing no cancer. Six months later a pet scan showed hot spots in clavicle, liver, abdomen and lung. The doctor I was seeing gave me 6 months to live.
I called Mayo and got in two weeks later. Treatment started in July 2016. It is now Dec. 2016 and pet scan shows no cancer. I'm told it will come back. Can this be cured?

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect @azlinda! Thank you for sharing your similar experience.
I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis but prayers to you and that your PET scans continue to stay clear!

I hope you find Connect to be a place you can frequent and get information and support from other community members. @retairforceman @ilene1 @overwhelmed @grammyx4 , can any of you comment to Linda's question? Perhaps this would be a good question for your provider too.

@azlinda, how often will you have to go in for return visits with your physician? every 3 months to do another PET?

I will have a PET scan every 3 months. Has anyone had experience with xeloda? My doctor said my progress is so good he wants me to try the oral chemo.
I appreciate your input.

I was on xeloda. Drink red gatorade for nausea and dehydration.

Thank you. Did you find xeloda worked?

REPLY

Yes but i should have stayed on it. The cancer is back they say

I'm so sorry to hear that.
How long did you take xeloda. I haven't started it yet.
