Osteoporosis (Kidney Transplant)

Posted by hello1234 @hello1234, Nov 27 5:29am

Hello to my Transplant Family!
I hope everyone is doing great and looking forward to Thanksgiving. I have a question. My last bone density scan showed severe osteoporosis. My local doctor is suggesting 12 months of monthly Evenity injections and then Prolia or Reclast.
Does anyone have any experience with these treatments (pros and cons)? Or do you take something else?
Also, did you hydrate at home before going for the injection or did you get IV hydration or a smaller dose to avoid kidney issues?
As always, many THANKS for any information you may have on this topic!

Good morning
I'm a liver transplant patient but can help with this question. My bone density had been declining for years due to my failed liver. Post transplant my Dr started me on twice a year prolia injections. My 1st post transplant density test (which I'll be honest I don't remember how long after starting the prolia it was) there was a noticeable improvement. Now I take it as a preventative measure. I don't do any special preparation before my injection, which is done in my Dr's office. 🤗

HI @footballmum 😊
Happy Thanksgiving and thank you so much for your response regarding Prolia! My current bone scan is showing severe osteoporosis, so my doctor suggests that I do another bone growth treatment like Evenity for one year before starting Prolia. It's very comforting to know that Prolia is working so well for you with no side
effects. I wonder if I should try the Evenity or just go directly to Prolia. Do you remember if your bone scan was osteopenia or osteoporosis? My spine is currently-3.1 so I may need Evenity first?
Thank you again for jumping in to tell me about your successful Prolia shots. That's valuable information for me!

Hi @l0lag0lag0b3
It's great to hear from you! I hope things are going well. Thank you so much for letting me know about your wife and Fosamax. This is the first time that zi heard of physical therapy to try and build up the muscles that support the back. That's good information! Please keep me posted on her density scan test results the next time she goes.
Thanks again for jumping in to help me. Have a wonderful holiday season!

Hello1234,
I must add the lower back therapy was recommended by the orthopedic Dr. (who handles the football team for our state) , apparently it is only recommended if the bone structure is intact.
Good to hear from you: "Wish you a Joyful and Happy holiday season"
